Let's talk about EMPATHY. We used to use fun little phrases like "walk in someone else's shoes" as ways to help people understand how to develop or show empathy. This is really not very good advice because your own perspectives and opinions and experiences will always limit your ability to truly feel what another person feels or to experience something in the same or even similar way that another person experiences - especially if that person's identities are far different from your own. I compare this to what happens when you try to literally step into someone else's footprints in the snow...Once you set your foot down inside the print, you have forever changed it and molded it into something that looks more like your own than the one laid before it. It is unavoidable. But there is an answer to this challenge that can lead to TRUE empathy and compassion. And that is, when someone tells you they feel something or have experienced something, you simply accept their story as true. You believe them. You do not have to "understand" in order to offer them compassion and grace. You do not need to fit their experiences into your own world view to treat them with respect or as a unique human being whose feelings and experiences are valid. So the next time someone shares something with you in search of empathy, don't try to step into their shoes. Just listen and allow their story to be truth for them. Honor their right to have a story that has nothing to do with you or anything you can understand.
