A recent Wall Street Journal article paints a chilling picture of the future of “search” as we know it, suggesting search giants like Google might be facing their own “iceberg moment.” Report after report, data after data, continue to point to younger generations turning away from “googling” and instead toward social media platforms as their primary sources of information. “Folks are increasingly heading to Instagram, Facebook, and even TikTok to ask questions, get recommendations, and discover trends,” says Scott McQuiggan, Ph.D., Social Cascade CEO and co-founder. “This shift is amplified by the rise of AI-generated content flooding the internet making it harder to find quality results than ever before.” AI-powered “answer engines” like Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Llama further amplify this strain on “good ol’ fashioned search, especially as AI summaries push results further down the page, " McQuiggan adds. This emergence is capable of leading to manipulation of search and answer results and contributing to the spread of mis- and disinformation. “Equally, we can harness this revolution for good to combat the legitimate concerns about AI’s potential to degrade information,” McQuiggan says.
