James Watt recently caught up with Jamie Laing on his brilliant podcast 🎙️, Great Company! They spoke about what we’re doing here at Social Tip 🌱, as well as a host of other fascinating topics - you can check out the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/esNQ4Wcs
About us
Social Tip is on a mission to help brands connect more authentically online through rewarding their customers with cash. We help turn a brand’s customers into their influencers. This is good old-fashioned word of mouth marketing but amplified for the digital age and scalable through our innovative technology. The conventional ways of marketing are becoming less and less effective. 70% of people no longer trust adverts, Gen Z are allergic to anything that looks or feels like marketing, and it is increasingly difficult for brands to connect authentically on fragmented online platforms. In short, the old ways of marketing are broken. The answer is Social Tip. We build hype and buzz whilst putting money back into the pockets of everyday people for posting online about the things they love. This is the future, and it just needs a platform.

How Being ‘The Crazy Guy’ Landed Me a Job at the UK’s Hottest New Startup: When I asked myself, “Where do I want to spend the majority of my waking hours?” the answer was easy. The hard part….? Landing a role in a place where I had zero connections — no ties to the founder, no links to the team. So how did I do it? Well, let’s just say 'normal' wasn’t an option. As Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, says: “The crazy guy always wins.” I decided to go all in. Bold moves, big risks — and a little bit of crazy. The result? Welcome to my next chapter at Social Tip ⭐️ Thank you to James Watt and Georgia Lee for liking my crazy, looking forward to building together🚀

You asked and we listened - there are two HUGE updates coming soon to Social Tip! First up, the Android version of our app is in development and will be released very soon. This opens up our community to the huge volume of Android users, meaning more people than ever before can earn with Social Tip. Second, Instagram Stories - after huge demand from both our brand partners and our members, it is possible for members to earn when they post about brands on their Instagram stories, as well as with grid posts, reels and TikTok content. It’s now easier than ever before to earn by sharing the love for your favourite brands. We are going to be testing these soon, so if you’d like to be involved (of course in exchange for a Social Tip reward), then please like the post and drop a comment below to let us know. #socialtip

Thanks Crowdcube
Social Tip breaks the record for the most successful ever prelaunch crowdfund on Crowdcube. 🎉 At BrewDog we broke multiple crowdfunding records, and I am really excited to have broken another record with my brand-new business Social Tip as we raised an amazing £2.5m. This is in addition to the £1m of my own money that I have already invested into the business. For those of you who like statistic, we had 22,000 campaign views, 5,000 campaign followers and 1,307 Social Tip investors with the average investment being £1,171. We also had Steven Bartlett join us as an investor and advisor. With the crowdfunding landscape having changed so significantly since we pioneered community ownership at BrewDog here are the things I did differently with the Social Tip campaign: 1) I worked alongside a fantastic expert and advisor in Jonathan Keeling 2) We had around £1m of cornerstone funding from brilliant investors – Crowdcube investors invested on exactly the same terms. 3) Throwing cats out of helicopters was replaced with 1-1 zoom meetings with potential Crowdcube investors. 4) We hosted an amazing in person Social Tip breakfast in London where investors could learn more about the company. 5) We prioritised answering investor questions promptly and we were very active on the Crowdcube forums. Thank you to everyone who invested in Social Tip. With your help we are focussed on building a UK based business that scales quickly internationally. 5 Reasons Not To Invest In Social Tip.
5 Reasons Not To Invest In Social Tip 1) We might not get enough users. Social Tip’s viability is dependent on getting tens of thousands of users to the platform. If we cannot do this, the business fails. To grow our user base, we are going to encourage members to make their first qualifying post about Social Tip which should help create a flywheel. Additionally, we are working with partner brands to promote Social Tip to their audiences. Plus, we have a few interesting marketing concepts up our sleeves too! 2) We might not get enough partner brands. We also need to sign up thousands of partner brands. Despite not having launched, we already have over 50 brilliant brands signed up which will enable up to build compelling case studies to share with additional potential partners going forward. Furthermore, we are swimming with the tide here. More and more brands are frustrated at how ineffective their marketing dollars are and are looking for new ways to deepen their connections with their biggest fans. 3) Posts might lack authenticity. Because our members are being paid to post there is a potential criticism that the brand love our members show will not be authentic. I would strongly argue that the inverse will hold true. With Social Tip, our members have to buy a product first and foremost before they can make a qualifying post about it. Thereafter their payment is capped at 10% of the purchase value. The fact that our members have to spend their own hard-earned money on the brands they post about should ensure all of the brand love we showcase is genuine. 4) The lack of control scares brands. Many legacy brands are still coming to terms with the lack of control they already have on social platforms and these brands will need to take an even bigger leap into the unknown and trust that their loyal customers are indeed those who are best placed to create content for them. However, whether Social Tip is successful not, every brand owner needs come to the liberating realisation that their brand does not actually belong to them - it belongs to their customers and their community. With that realisation in place, lack of control changes from being scary to being both empowering and a key growth driver. 5) We are heavily regulated. Because we pay our members in real cash we are regulated as a financial service provider. This means extensive compliance not just in the UK, but in every country in which we operate. Given each country has different rules here and that we are going to look to scale Social Tip internationally at pace, we will need to ensure financial compliance in dozens of countries internationally. This is not impossible, but just difficult, time consuming and at times expensive. There are of course lots of reasons why I am incredibly excited about the future of Social Tip. But I also wanted to share the very real challenges that I spend a lot of my time puzzling over. Links in comments.

Why not just sit on a beach somewhere? Why just take 4 days off after 17 years as BrewDog CEO? Why dive straight into another ambitious venture and risk complete failure? Great questions. But I didn’t even consider them for a nanosecond. I just love building things, and after 17 amazing years as BrewDog CEO, I wanted to throw myself headfirst back into build mode, and I am excited to tell you all about a brand-new business I am launching. Say Hello to Social Tip! This new business builds on everything I have learned from almost 2 decades at the cutting edge of marketing whilst building BrewDog. None of the wildest campaign, craziest stunts or cleverest advertising even came close to the brand building power of genuine peer to peer recommendations. Authentic brand love trumps any other form of marketing, and community is increasingly becoming the cornerstone of any winning strategy. Building on these insights, Social Tip helps brands turn their customers into their influencers. This is good old-fashioned word of mouth marketing but amplified for the digital age and scalable through our innovative technology. How Social Tip works is incredibly simple: 1) Someone buys something from one of our partner brands. 2) They then post about it positively on social media. 3) Social Tip’s proprietary technology works out the value of that post. 4) That person is then rewarded in real cash. At the end of the day, people don’t trust adverts, they don’t trust influencers or marketing. They trust people they know. The conventional ways of marketing are becoming less and less effective: 70% of people no longer trust adverts, Gen Z are allergic to anything that looks or feels like marketing, macro influencers impact is on the decline, and it is increasingly difficult for brands to connect authentically on fragmented online platforms. Social Tip enables the best brands to build hype and buzz whilst putting money back into the pockets of everyday people for posting online about the things they love. If you are a member of the public and would like to use Social Tip you can sign up to our waitlist at socialtip(.)io , and if you look after a brand and would like to learn more about using Social Tip for to grow your business please drop me a DM. The Social Tip app is due to launch in Summer 2024 and I am delighted to be building this business with Thomas K Matecki & Georgia Lee as well as some fantastic investors and advisors. I am also going to take you all with me every step of the way on this new journey, giving you a front row seat to this high-stakes start-up. I always said with BrewDog, that if it did not work out, I would happily go back to being a North Atlantic Captain. ⚓ That remains the backup plan if Social Tip fails. Fingers crossed it doesn’t.
