    THE 10 MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD MY FIRST REAL ENCOUNTER WITH POWERFUL WOMEN -- at least from a professional perspective -- occurred in my mid-20s in Los Angeles while serving as new business director for Smith-Hemmings-Gosden (the largest independent direct marketing agency in the West). Both by observation and experience I quickly discovered most of the heavy lifting to execute our most complex marketing campaigns were being handled with near flawless, elegant precision by women from about age 25 to 40. Though some lacked the obligatory bachelors or masters degree to give them passage into agencies like ours, I saw them run circles around most of the men. They seemed to work harder, smarter, with less ego and infinitely more empathy - for our clients, our writers, designers, producers, production staff, even out vendors. This stark reality of capable, powerful women running the show was even more pronounced during my tenure in the nonprofit fundraising world, specifically during my time as Vice President of Communications for Mercy Ships (what's now a well-respected global charity providing hope and healing through state-of-the-art healthcare for the forgotten poor). During this formative season of my career I saw how the power of a woman's empathy and intuition was not only a compliment to the traditional attributes of their male counterparts, but often outshined their notions of effective leadership, management and operational pragmatism.
