I wanted to do the happy dance💃🏼 when I read this article this morning.
Some Gen Z and millennials are giving up influencing for 9-5 jobs. Before overfocusing on the 9-5 aspect of the headline, let’s look at why this shift is occurring. There are plenty of other options to 9-5, such as building a flexible home-based business that is not influencer-based.
First, a few quotes from the article:
"...chasing social media virality had lost its once intoxicating hook."
"You always have to be on all the time."
“…unrelenting pressure to post and perform for social media’s pleasure"
"It is way too much of a self-obsessive job."
So why the happy dance? We are an addicted society, and these statements are directly calling out some of these unhealthy behaviors.
Our addictions are not just drugs or alcohol. It’s social media, negativity, busyness, stress, and many more habits and ways of thinking. We claw and grasp our way through life instead of enjoying what is right in front of us.
The result is setting goals such as $10K months, counting likes on our social accounts, and self-obsessive actions that ultimately lead to disconnection. Disconnection from our loved ones, friends, society, and most importantly, ourselves.
Instead of going inward to know our needs and to understand what will fulfill us, we chase dreams marketed by external influences (and influencers).
The path to fulfillment is not driven by external influences, it is honored by listening to your inner self.
Here’s what these ex-influencers are now looking for:
- Alignment
- Fulfillment
- Improved well-being
- Financial stability
- Improved mental health
- Work in a team setting with a daily structure
- Helping others
These are healthy goals! They are about being authentic to who you are and contributing to society in a healthy way. They are about self-growth. They are more about the journey than achieving an external goal.
That is why I wanted to do a happy dance!
These goals support healthier relationships, courage, and compassion. These are goals that bring about a healing connection.
The same is true of a business. A sustainable business in alignment with you. It lifts you. It energizes you and supports your well-being.
A sustainable business is built in alignment with your strengths, skills, needs, and values, and accommodates your limitations.
This is where I begin with my clients – exploring questions around strengths, limitations, lifestyle desires, and goals before working together on their business strategy, re-evaluating their business model, or building (or rebuilding) the foundation.
By building your business around these factors, you can more easily adapt to market changes, fluxes in business growth, and events or challenges in your personal life.
Your work is an important part of your life journey and the choices you make will impact your well-being, success, and happiness.
