The new Matter 1.4 specification now allows devices to preserve power by sleeping for up to 18 hours using Long Idle Times (LITs). Previously only Short Idle Times (SITs), with a maximum period of 15 seconds, were available for Intermittently Connected Devices (ICDs). This new feature can extend battery life for devices that don't need to be reactive to incoming commands such as switches and sensors. The screenshot below shows two switches configured to report the switch state attribute every 30 minutes. The top graph shows a switch running in SIT mode and the narrow power spikes are the poll messages that the device must issue every 15 seconds. The bottom graph shows a switch running in LIT mode without needing to poll its parent and allowing it to sleep for the full 30-minute reporting interval. The wider spikes are the devices making their attribute reports, the SIT consumes less power than the LIT during this data transfer as the LIT also needs to check in to maintain its place in the network. However, over the two hours this test was run the LIT consumed 27.84 µWh which is 60% of the 47.02 µWh consumed by the SIT device. Silicon Labs have example LIT applications built into the Simplicity Studio IDE which can be used with an updated Raspberry Pi Matter Hub image plus documentation on LIT features. More details on this new feature and these resources can be found in this video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e5s2keYz The new Matter 1.4 specification with full technical details is available from the Connectivity Standards Alliance website: https://csa-iot.org #Matter #Thread #IoT
