  • At Becker's Healthcare Fall Payer Issue Roundtable, our panel with Kim W. Webb, Erin Henderson Moore, Gary Rosenfield and Trey Sutten reflected on important AI trends that will translate into 2025 to advance access and enhance patient care. Below is the quick list of takeaways, but you can read the full article here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eiQi2zV6 1. AI implementation with accountability is paramount. Organizations must establish governance models that address data quality, mitigate biases, and maintain human oversight to ensure AI complements care delivery while driving equitable healthcare access. 2. Prioritize cross-functional collaboration. Integrate AI and data analytics across departments to identify patient needs, improve access to care, and address challenges by fostering dialogue and awareness to optimize outcomes across the healthcare ecosystem. 3. Use AI with health equity capabilities. Find AI tools that can accurately predict healthcare gaps and streamline resources for underserved populations by addressing barriers like transportation, administrative burdens, and claims processing, enabling more effective interventions and equitable access to care. Some organizations have already integrated AI, mostly on a departmental basis, yet many remain unaware. It's growing, and it's not going anywhere. Educate yourself so that you're prepared to embrace it. And when the time comes to make decisions, you can make informed choices to overcome challenges related to access, equity, and profitability. • How can providers and payers move AI integrations beyond pilot projects to enterprise-wide solutions? Our panel discussion at The Millennium Alliance Summit in Nashville this week highlighted the challenges and opportunities for successful and scalable AI in healthcare. Here's a roadmap: 🔑 Building the AI Business Case: AI has the potential to drive long-term ROI across healthcare, but aligning this promise with near-term operational and financial realities—like 6-month budgets—can be tough. A practical approach? Start with a clear equation for adoption: Short-term wins = Adoption (pilots + team buy-in) = KPIs (time saved, accuracy, quality) = Long-term ROI. 🔄 Governance & Adoption Models: Innovation teams are great at piloting solutions, but true scalability requires broader integration. Cross-functional committees embedded in both clinical and operational workflows ensure innovation translates into everyday care delivery. 🤝 Collaboration is Everything: As Kim put it: "We can’t do this alone. Successful AI implementation relies on collaboration between payers, providers, local health systems, FQHCs, and community clinics to deliver holistic, equitable care." 🔒 Keeping the Human in the Loop: Trey highlighted the importance of balancing ambition and practicality: "AI in healthcare is about augmenting the human element to drive better outcomes, not replacing it." Whether it's identifying KPIs to ensuring data governance and designing effective pilots, we’re excited to see providers and payers finding their footing for better care and sustainable growth. "AI in healthcare will never be fully automated because, at the end of the day, it’s about humans helping humans. Machines can enhance decisions, but the human touch remains essential." – Eben Esterhuizen, CTO & Co-Founder, Siftwell.   Last week, during a webinar hosted by The Root Cause Coalition, Trey Sutten, Eben Esterhuizen, and Kim W. Webb explored the practical applications of AI in healthcare, focusing on practicality and safety over hype.   Current AI applications in healthcare prioritize predictions and actionable recommendations over the "futuristic generative AI" that often dominates headlines. The mission is clear: turn historical data into meaningful insights to improve patient outcomes and optimize costs.   What does this look like in real-world scenarios? Siftwell's models can identify the root causes of health disparities—like food insecurity or lack of transportation—and recommend targeted interventions. For example, ensuring access to primary care can help reduce avoidable healthcare expenses, such as emergency department visits.   AI should never replace humans—it should enhance their abilities. As Kim said, "Knowing that 65% of a cohort has low adherence to medication doesn’t just tell us a problem—it informs solutions, like deploying community health workers in high-need areas."   At its core, AI in healthcare is a tool to support decision-making, with the ultimate goal of empowering people—patients, providers, and communities. • "You’re not just a data company—you’re a healthcare company that uses data. That’s what makes this partnership work." – Blair Fjeseth, CEO & President of Mountain Health CO-OP During the Fierce Healthcare Payer Summit panel, Blair joined the stage with Trey Sutten to share how Siftwell’s tailored approach has helped the CO-OP drive transformative outcomes in some of the most rural and underserved communities. Here are some highlights: 🚀 Data to Action: Instead of simply handing over data, Siftwell delivers clear, actionable insights. For example, identifying barriers for preventative care led to partnerships (such as Uber Health and Cologard) that have drastically increased screening rates. 📈 Member Retention: Siftwell helped Mountain Health COOP design targeted campaigns that improved re-enrollment rates by 13% and preventative care by 15%, including a 20% increase in screenings.   Blair summed it up perfectly: "If you're not already using AI to support your members, you're already behind. Start now." It was a great conversation in Austin and we're looking forward to more in the future. A big thanks to Chris Hayden and Noah Tong for facilitating! 📸 by Questex

Join Siftwell for an educational webinar, "Taking the BS out of AI: AI for Health Equity in Community-Based Payer Organizations" on Wednesday, November 20 from 2-3pm ET. There’s a lot of noise in healthcare around AI, and along with that, a lot of skepticism. It fosters a myriad of questions for plan leaders like: What type of AI makes sense for my organization? What goals can it help me accomplish? Is it clinically safe? How are other plans using it to scale their health equity initiatives? We’re bringing together peers from community-based plans for a roundtable discussion on harnessing the power of AI to transform community health outcomes and create a more equitable healthcare system. Alongside our plan executive guests, you will hear real-world starts and stops of leveraging predictive and causal AI technology and how plan leaders are mitigating bias and addressing health disparities to improve outcomes for underserved, complex populations.
