Over the last year, we've engaged in extensive discussions with developers, engineering leaders, and executives from organizations worth hundreds of billions of dollars about using GenAI in the SDLC.   A common theme emerged: the importance of GenAI Code Transparency – knowing how much code in a codebase originated from a GenAI tool.   In our latest blog post, we explore nine reasons why developers and organizations care about GenAI Code Transparency.    The top reason? Investor-backed companies expect to have to explain their use of GenAI in future technical due diligences—just like they do today for Open Source usage.   Read the full blog post to learn more about each reason and how GenAI Code Transparency can benefit your organization.   Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dyApKkiD

Along with Google's latest quarterly results, CEO Sundar Pichai indicated that 25% of Google's code is written in part with GenAI tools. Venture Capitalist Tomasz Tunguz recently observed "Already, 50% of code at Microsoft & other large internet companies is written by AI." Using GenAI for coding can bring significant benefits to the organization and to developers. But what about the risks-- in particular the IP risks of software created in full or in part by GenAI with respect to infringement, trade secret, patent, copyright, and exit risks? Sema is pleased to be sponsoring WIPR - World IP Review's upcoming webinar with an esteemed panel on this critical topic on Tuesday, 10th December. It's already on track to be one of the highest-attended webinars of the year. Information and link to the free sign up below. https://lnkd.in/e9P6-arJ

Used correctly, GenAI coding tools present a massive organizational opportunity. Used incorrectly there’s massive risk. Two important pieces came out last week on the importance of cutting through the hype to get GenAI coding usage right.   Martin Fowler and the Thoughtworks team’s Technology Radar included a strong word of caution: “We see some antipatterns starting to appear in the hyperactive AI space, including the mistaken notion that humans can fully replace pair programming with AI as the companion, overreliance on coding assistance suggestions, code quality issues with generated code and faster growth rates of codebases.”   And Forrester's Chris Condo warns that while “we feel that genAI will become a pervasive force through all phases of software delivery,” developers are critical in the process: “At least one organization will try to replace 50% of its developers with AI and fail… [companies should ensure that] developers are the human in the loop making sure that the coding suggestions are correct, that the code actually performs the intended operations.”   These arguments, not to mention IP risks and M&A risks, point to the importance of GenAI Code Transparency: to increase appropriate usage of GenAI coding, while also managing the downside risk. GenAI Code Transparency measures not only how much GenAI code is used, but also how much the Human is in the Loop, and what the estimated ROI for the organization is on adopting the tools. https://lnkd.in/eRPTSvZX

Sema is honored to have one of the globally leading experts in responsible AI, Nell Watson, prepare a whitepaper on the Transparency of Generative AI use by coders.   Key findings:   GenAI codebase transparency is essential for safety, regulatory compliance, and ethical AI development. Robust code provenance tracking systems offer wide-ranging benefits. Agentic AI systems present new challenges, including unintended optimization and value misalignment. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration among developers, regulators, policymakers, ethicists, and the public. https://lnkd.in/eKcZDvfg

Sema Product Announcement: We have now released the Beta version of ROI of AI: measuring the impact of Engineering teams using GenAI in the SDLC.   This was a top priority for Engineering leaders we’ve heard from, who are getting lots of questions from Boards, CEOs and CFOs on what, if anything, is changing because of GenAI usage while coding.   As an example, here are sample results from one of Sema’s products. This team estimates they are 25% more productive as a result of using GenAI, and they've captured 53% of the total potential benefit from GenAI tools.   Want to learn more? Sema has just announced the latest release of standards for software teams using GenAI to code. These standards came about as a result of thorough external research on the benefits and risk mitigation for using such tools, input from the AI Advisory Council, and data analysis from Sema's propriety database of GenAI coding usage among leading software teams and investors. There is no change in the standards for blending GenAI code-- it remains critical for engineering teams using GenAI to take the LLM output and modify it. This addresses maintainability risk, security risk, IP risk, and exit risk. As with so much AI usage, "Humans in the Loop" are critical for responsible AI usage. What has changed is a significant increase in the recommended range for using GenAI tools-- now at 15-30% of new code, up from 5-20%. The evidence from the past six months is compelling that GenAI tools can make a significant, positive, impact on developer satisfaction and productivity. Therefore software organizations who aren't using GenAI at least at those levels are missing a significant opportunity. Interested in learning more?
