Millions of children around the world face barriers to accessing the resources they need to thrive as learners and in life. At Save the Children, we work to fill these gaps, delivering books, learning materials, and support that help set children up for success. Thanks to Penguin Random House, more than 2 million books have been donated to children in the U.S. and around the world —ensuring stories, knowledge, and dreams reach the hands of kids who need them most. In celebration of 10 years of partnership – it was announced today that the publisher will give an additional one million books by 2027, marking the largest global book donation in Save the Children’s history. And today through December 10, Penguin Random House will donate $1 for every book sold to support our early education programs in rural America (up to $10,000). 2024 was a tough year for children. From unimaginable loss and destruction to devastating drought and hunger. It is with profound sadness that we confirm that a staff member of Save the Children was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis today, the second Save the Children colleague killed in Gaza since the war began. Ahmad Faisal Isleem Al-Qadi, 39, who was deaf, had worked for the administrative team in Gaza since May 2024. He was killed early Saturday afternoon as he was returning home to his wife and three-year-old daughter from the mosque. Inger Ashing, Chief Executive of Save the Children International, said: “There are not strong enough words to express the grief and outrage we feel at the loss of Ahmad in an Israeli airstrike. He was a valued member of our team and loved by all who met him. "We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms and demand an investigation. This war has been the deadliest on record for the killing of UN and aid workers, with at least 337 reported killed since October 2023. Violence against civilians and humanitarian workers is unacceptable and it must stop. There must be a ceasefire. There must be accountability.” Save the Children has been providing essential services and support to Palestinian children impacted by the ongoing conflict since 1953.
