Maritime Security Bulletin and Geopolitical Update Re: U.S. Department of Defense and State Warn of Turkish Invasion of Northern Syria, Post Trump Inauguration. Issued by: Sanborn Analytics Contact: [email protected] Phone: +1 (617) 539-6114 No Media Collaboration: LeMonde of France (No Media Collaboration) Date: December 17th, 2024 Subject: Turkey's Potential Military Action in Northern Syria – Turkiye Amassing Troops Along the Syrian Border. Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin and Geopolitical update to advise the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea of recent geopolitical developments concerning Turkiye’s military posture and its implications for regional security. Sanborn Analytics has confirmed through open and HUMINT sources that officials within the U.S. State and Defense departments are increasingly concerned over Turkiye's potential plans to invade Syrian territory held by Kurdish forces. This concern stems from a significant buildup of Turkish forces near the Syrian border, indicating preparations for a military offensive. Turkiye has historically supported Islamist Sunni rebel forces that played a role in ousting Bashar al-Assad from power. However, Turkiye regards Kurdish groups, including the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which control northeastern Syria, as an extension of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The PKK has waged a long-standing insurgency against Turkey. Sanborn Analytics has corroborated reports from Turkish naval sources confirming that both Turkish naval and ground forces have been placed on high alert. This raises concerns that Turkiye may initiate military action in northern Syria shortly after the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump. Analysts within Turkiye's military and political circles speculate that President Trump’s perceived inexperience in foreign affairs may lead to a shift in U.S. policy, allowing Turkey to act freely in the region and solidify its control over northern Syria. Maritime stakeholders should remain vigilant to potential disruptions in the region, particularly concerning the security of sea lanes and ports in Syria and Turkiye. Armed naval forces operating in the Eastern Mediterranean should closely monitor Turkish military activities along the Syrian border and be prepared for any escalatory movements that could affect regional stability. Conclusion and Recommendations: Sanborn Analytics advises maritime shipping operators and military forces to remain on heightened alert in light of these developments. Continued monitoring of the situation is essential to mitigate the potential risks posed by Turkish military actions, especially in the context of increased naval and ground force activity near Syria. Maritime Security Bulletin and Geopolitical Update Re: (2) Israeli Soldiers Killed and (4) Others Wounded in Gaza Building Collapse Issued by Sanborn Analytics Date: December 17th, 2024 Email: [email protected] Phone: (+1)(617)539-6114 Subject: Casualties in Southern Gaza Strip - Impact on Regional Security Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin to advise the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea of the latest developments in the southern Gaza Strip. On December 16th, 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported the deaths of two soldiers and the wounding of four others in the southern Gaza Strip. The casualties occurred in the Rafah area after a building collapsed, reportedly due to significant prior damage. According to initial reports from the IDF, no explosives or Hamas booby traps were identified at the site of the collapse. The names of the soldiers have been partially released, with one identified as Maj. (res.) Moshiko (Maxim) Rozenwald, 35, a company commander in the Combat Engineering Corps' 7107th Battalion, from Modiin. The second soldier’s identity is withheld pending family notification. This incident is an indicator of the ongoing instability in the region, which may impact the security environment for maritime operations in the Mediterranean and surrounding areas. The potential for further escalation of violence or disruptions to military and commercial shipping routes remains a concern. The maritime community is advised to maintain heightened vigilance and ensure that operational protocols are adjusted to address any emerging threats from this unstable environment. MARITIME SECURITY BULLETIN & ADVISORY Re: U.S. Military Airstrike on Houthi Command-and-Control Facility in Sana’a, Yemen (Attack Deemed Ineffective) Date: December 17th, 2024 Issued by: Sanborn Analytics Contact: [email protected] | Phone: (+1) (617) 539-6114 Media Credit: Maritime-Executive (see link) Summary: On December 17th, 2024, U.S. military forces conducted an airstrike targeting a key command-and-control facility operated by Iran-backed Houthi fighters in Sana’a, Yemen. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the facility played a significant role in the coordination of Houthi attacks on U.S. Navy warships and merchant vessels navigating through the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Following the attack, Sanborn Analytics conducted drone surveillance of the area and determined that the airstrike was ineffective in neutralizing the threat. As such, merchant vessels operating in the region are urged to exercise heightened caution. The Houthi forces remain fully capable of executing military operations in the region. Advisory: Given the ongoing operational capabilities of Houthi fighters, Sanborn Analytics strongly advises all merchant vessels and naval forces to remain vigilant while transiting the Southern Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and surrounding areas. The region continues to pose a significant risk due to the presence of armed groups with the ability to target maritime assets. It is recommended that vessels follow established safety protocols, maintain strict communication, and be prepared for potential escalatory actions in the coming days. Incident Overview: On December 15th, 2024, during a severe storm, the Russian-flagged oil tanker Volgoneft 212 split in half, spilling petroleum products into the Kerch Strait. The 136-meter vessel, built in 1969, carried approximately 4,300 tonnes of fuel oil. The bow section sank, and footage from Russian state media depicted waves washing over the tanker’s deck. The vessel's 15-member crew was reported safe, although at least one fatality has been confirmed. A second tanker, Volgoneft 239 (132 meters, built-in 1973), sustained damage and was reported adrift in the same area. This vessel, with a 14-member crew, also has a loading capacity of 4,200 tonnes of oil products. Geographic Context: The Kerch Strait, situated between mainland Russia and Crimea (annexed by Russia in 2014), is a critical waterway for maritime transit and regional security. Response Efforts: Russian authorities, including Rosmorrechflot and the Ministry of Emergency Situations, have deployed over 50 personnel, Mi-8 helicopters, and rescue tugboats to the site. Reports indicate equipment is actively working to contain the oil spill and manage the distressed vessels. Implications: Environmental Impact: The extent of the spill and its environmental consequences remain unclear. Preliminary visuals depict blackened stormy seas near the stricken tankers. Maritime Operations: Navigation through the Kerch Strait may face disruptions due to ongoing rescue and containment operations. Mariners are advised to proceed with caution in the area and monitor updates from local maritime authorities. Recommendations: For Maritime Operators: Avoid transit near the Kerch Strait until further notice.
