When I first started out in HR it was unusual for smaller organizations to have employees across the globe, but today it is becoming the norm and this means that all these organizations need to have HR practices that can manage across different culture, laws, regulations, policies etc. One particularly challenging issue is setting compensation across different countries. Salary.com (my favorite compensation tool) provides a guide on how to think about it. Key points: * Global compensation is the salary, incentives, benefits that are paid out to an employee *On a global scale cost of living, inflation, tax rates, economic conditions can vary and need to be taken into consideration as you set your global pay strategy *When setting a global pay program you need to take into consideration cultural differences, compliance (relevant local laws), internal equity (paying people doing similar jobs an equivalent local salary), and cost control * Global pay strategy needs to be: fair and consistent, competitive positioning (as related to your compensation philosophy) and align with company value * To implement a global compensation management program: first step create a pay philosophy including relative pay across local market and internal equity.
