Each year, millions of older adults experience financial exploitation. According to the FBI, people 60 and older were targeted by scams, resulting in over $3.4 billion in losses in 2023. With an increase in online shopping and donation requests, fraud is more common over the holidays. Some common tactics of scammers include: 🎁 Asking people to buy gift cards with the promise of being paid back 📲 Pretending to be a Medicare representative and asking for someone's Medicare or Social Security number ⛈️Using current events, like schemes involving insurance claims after disasters Protect you and your loved ones with the Eldercare Locator, a public service provided by our friends at the Administration for Community Living. This resource connects older adults and their caregivers with endorsed local resources that provide assistance with meals, home services, transportation, caregiver training, care and more. 💙 Check out the Eldercare Locator here: https://loom.ly/F9ppiu4

Nikki Giovanni, known as "the Princess of Black Poetry", passed peacefully on Monday at age 81 with her life partner Virginia "Ginney" Fowler by her side. She had been diagnosed with cancer for the third time. Known for her advocacy and charisma, Nikki used her voice as a poet to address issues of Black identity and Black liberation. She was a leader during the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s and ‘70s. In 1968, she self-published her first volume of poetry, “Black Feeling Black Talk/Black Judgement.” Her poems conveyed feelings about the assassinations of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers and Malcolm X and the death of her grandmother. “My dream was not to publish or to even be a writer: my dream was to discover something no one else had thought of. I guess that’s why I’m a poet. We put things together in ways no one else does,” Nikki once said. Rest in Power, Nikki. Thank you for using your gifts to advocate for Black LGBTQ+ elders, and for being an inspiring trailblazer for our community.🕯️🕊️🌈 Read more about Nikki's life here: https://lnkd.in/gZRVWxsP #WeRefusetoBeInvisible #RestinPower #NikkiGiovanni #BlackLivesMatter #LGBTQAging (Photo Credit: LA Times - Deborah Feingold)
