Rua Diagnostics, a spin-off company of the Weil Institute, was named one of the most promising health-tech start-ups during the 2024 Texas Life Science Forum. At the event, Rua presented its “micro-GC” device, a portable analyzer that can detect a range of highly prevalent and lethal conditions directly at the point of care using only a sample of exhaled breath. The device is completely non-invasive and can provide both a diagnosis and information on disease stage in 30 minutes. The micro-GC platform was developed by a multidisciplinary team of Weil Institute members led by Dr. Xudong (Sherman) Fan, Associate Director of the Weil Institute and Richard A. Auhll Endowed Professor of Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Kevin Ward, Executive Director of the Weil Institute and Professor of Emergency Medicine and Biomedical Engineering. In 2023, the team worked with Innovation Partnerships at U-M to establish Rua Diagnostics with the goal of further developing and commercializing the technology. “I’m pleased to see this well-deserved recognition of Rua Diagnostics’ groundbreaking point-of-care breath diagnostic,” said Dr. Kelly Sexton, Associate Vice President for Research – Innovation Partnerships and Economic Impact. “Innovation Partnerships has supported the commercialization efforts of Drs. Ward and Fan for years, and it is inspiring to see the continued commercial advancement of their technologies. Their collaboration, combining expertise from Michigan Medicine and Michigan Engineering, exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary research and innovation at U-M and its potential to transform patient care.” Read the full story: https://michmed.org/mdqnM Visit the Rua Diagnostics website: https://lnkd.in/gc5h2tte University of Michigan Biomedical Engineering #criticalcare #biomedicalengineering #engineering
