Saving Farms One Beer at a Time

About us

A fifth-generation family farm, and a first-generation craft malthouse, Root Shoot Malting produces responsibly-raised, caringly-crafted, high-quality malts for Colorado’s craft brewing community. We believe farmers are stewards of the land and that responsible agriculture can support a better beer industry. We value fresh water, mountain views, thriving wildlife, and healthy soil. We work in collaboration with our partner breweries, distilleries, and craft malt network, to save family farms...one beer at a time.

  • 🌾 Whoops, we missed World Soil Day yesterday—but let’s be real, as farmers, we celebrate soil so much we probably should send it a Valentine’s card. ❤️ 🤔What’s happening at Olander Farms this time of year, you ask? ✌️For the second year, we’re growing 40 acres of ⛈️Thunder winter barley, a variety bred and studied by our friends at Oregon State University. There were some pretty tasty beers brewed with our ⛈️Thunder Pilsner malt this year (and lots of requests for more of it!), so we're excited to bring it back to the malthouse next season. 🆕️-to-us, we’re trialing 40 acres of 🪄MAGIC winter barley, with thanks to our friends at Anheuser-Busch Agricultural Resources in Fort Collins who introduced us to this barley! We sourced 🪄MAGIC from Idaho and it's primarily bred by the University of Idaho in Idaho’s Magic Valley (because, where else would it grow?). In these photos, you’ll spot 🪄MAGIC on the right and ⛈️Thunder on the left, both planted into last year's alfalfa. Thanks to our nutrient-rich soil (no regenerative ag buzzwords here, we LIVE it!), our barley is tucked in for the winter—resting up to work their 🪄MAGIC next season! Happy World Soil Day, EVERYDAY!

  • 🌾We may be biased, but local malt plays a key role in the success of the Colorado brewing industry, and there’s an important reason to prioritize local when it comes to the quality of Colorado beer -- The local grains being malted by Colorado maltsters are fresh and unique! 🙏We wholeheartedly agree with Steve Kurowski, the Executive Director of the Craft Maltsters Guild, in that supporting your local brewery is a great choice. Supporting your local brewery🍻, who supports their local malthouse🌾, who supports their local farmer🚜 is even better. 📚Read the full Denver Westword article (thanks to Ryan Pachmayer) below 👇 https://lnkd.in/gaaj8GEr ... and then reach out to us to order Root Shoot malts! 🤫Psst… our Malted Corn is a-MAIZE-ing and we think you need a few bags.😘

  • Cyber Monday? More like Silo Monday. 😅🌾 🌾While you’re snagging deals online, we’re over here anxiously waiting for the delivery that truly counts: ODYSSEY BARLEY! ⚠️🚨Yep, you ready that right! We're bringing back the coveted GN zero Odyssey variety, thanks to our friends in Wyoming! Look for some Odyssey Pilsner malt to drop sooooon. 🙏 Thanks to YOUR amazing support, we raised enough through our #hailno Bonfire t-shirt fundraiser and generous single barrel donations from our Distillery 291, Matt Hondorf, and Talnua Distillery friends to restock our barley inventory that was wiped out this summer. 🚛No “out for delivery” updates here... just the sweet sound of a truck rumbling down the farm road, loaded with future beer magic and holiday spirits. 🚜Cheers to our craft beverage and farm communities! . . . #CyberMonday #SiloMonday #odyssey #GN0 #nonGNbarley

  • Today, we’re thankful for all the roots we’ve planted, the shoots we’ve grown, and the malting magic that transforms our hard work into liquid gold 🍺🥃. Cheers to our amazing customers who keep us malting, the land that keeps us farming, and the friends and family who keep us laughing through it all. From barley to bottle, it’s a journey worth toasting. 🦃🍂 Happy Thanksgiving, ya'll! -Your Root Shoot Malting Crew

  • 🥕Just out here growing food for the cows! …Okay fine, and for Thompson the Coonhound and Farmer Steve, if their snack-stealing habits are any indication. No biggie, right? 🐮😘 🚜The plan? Graze cows on this field (think radishes, turnips, sanfoin, legumes—fancy cow salad) for the next couple of years. Why? To beef up our soil health, cut back on fertilizers, outsmart Mother Nature’s mood swings, and eventually grow some top-notch barley for our malthouse! 🌏 Healthier soil = a healthier planet. Better barley = better beer (and whiskey!). Everybody wins. ✔️🍻
