TLDR: Jet lag has me up early, and reflecting on the elections has reminded me just how crucial it is to engage with our customers. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the election results, particularly how Harris's recent loss against Trump can serve as a powerful lesson for us. If you're in consumer please listen up. Harris’s campaign, at times, struggled to connect with certain voter concerns — a reminder that we all need to align more closely with our audience. It underscores the importance of understanding our customers’ needs, priorities, and perceptions. First, how our customers perceive us matters immensely — Ziyuan (Zi) L. and I need to consistently check in and align. We are the company our customers believe we are, and we’re in the industry they feel we’re in. In the past, I resisted the “travel” label due to investment sentiments, but I’ve come to realize that prioritizing our customers’ sense of comfort and familiarity is more important than what the industry sees us. It’s not our job to change their perceptions; it’s our job to embrace them. Secondly, listening to our customers goes beyond collecting feedback; it’s about understanding their evolving needs and challenges. The best companies don’t just serve customers — they learn from them, adapt, and improve. By genuinely listening, we build trust and position ourselves as responsive, attentive partners. The biggest mistake is thinking we know what’s best for our customers without validating it (think iPhone 4). We’re not perfect at this, but we’re learning every day. Finally, presenting ourselves as the most helpful guide isn’t about being flawless nor do we need to be a messiah. It’s about consistently showing up, ready to solve real problems in ways that may not be scalable whilst making a difference. When we become a dependable source of support and guidance, our customers see us as essential. Our Facebook group (Award Travel By Roame - https://lnkd.in/gaRDix7k) is a great example. Every day, I answer about 50-100 questions and posts. It’s time-consuming, yes, but also second to none in terms of insight. The community is appreciative and we've scaled this group to 115k Facebook members — all organically under a year. We’re more excited than ever to serve our customers in the coming weeks, months, and years. Thank you for being part of Roame (YC S23). We can’t wait to bring you the best award redemptions possible.
