We just posted a brand new AI Internship position on the Rocky Mountain AI Interest Group (RMAIIG) Job-Connections Slack channel! All details, including how to apply, are there! AI & Psychology Research Assistant - Paid Internship - Boulder Skills Required Literature review and the ability to look at papers from both a scientific and implementation-minded perspective. It can be a tedious task, but it provides the foundation for any algorithm to be used in clinical settings. Designing and managing scientific studies. We work with research organizations and IRBs to run studies designed to validate any component of our algorithm - from accuracy, consistency, use cases, and more. You will help design small-scale studies (using crowd-sourced data from sources like Amazon Mechanical Turk) that will eventually lead to larger-scale studies that validate our algorithm on more extensive use cases. Writing research papers and documentation. The ability to present the motivation and results behind our research to our customers is just as important as the results themselves. You will need to constantly document the steps along our validation journey and be able to explain why each step was taken and is useful. A strong data-minded approach with scientific motivations behind it. A lot of our customers are not technical experts or experienced clinicians. You should be able to communicate concrete metrics to a wide range of people such that whoever you are talking to can understand your results. Your Day-to-Day Our algorithm is explainable and motivated by existing psychiatric research. You will continue our research efforts by examining hundreds of papers from scientific, clinical, and engineering perspectives. You will have a strong understanding of our customers’ use cases and needs, and use that to guide your research efforts. You will be the interface between our engineering team and our research/validation team, ensuring our algorithm keeps consistency with the literature it is based on. Writing whitepapers tailored towards each of our customers that explain how the algorithm works as well as our validation journey and what we learned along the way. Managing our current and future studies, analyzing the results, presenting your findings, and submitting for potential publication. You Should Apply If: You enjoy complex problems with not-so-obvious solutions. At a startup, you won’t always have the expertise, resources, or data collection you might have at a large institutional research team. What aspects would you want to validate in an initial study? How would you collect a dataset with a limited budget? What populations would be most valuable to look at for an early study? You are an undergraduate or graduate student with some research experience in a clinical setting. Knowing how the end-to-end process works, from proposal writing to data collection to analysis, etc., is extremely valuable.

Thanks to Anne and Steven for their presentation last night! We had a packed house on a snowy night, and heard from three fascinating organizations using AI for Good! Big appreciation to Phil Nugent for organizing and running the meeting.
My cofounder Anne Wintemute and I at AimeeSays.com had the opportunity to present at Rocky Mountain AI Interest Group (RMAIIG) last night. Thanks Phil Nugent for making that happen. It was an honor to be selected. During the presentation, I mentioned that someone from Iran was on our site earlier that day, likely getting help with domestic abuse. It would have been 1am or 2am in the morning in Tehran, which means the person was probably accessing the site in secret. It's easy to imagine what her life must be like to require that secrecy. It's easy to imagine what she might be relying on Aimee Says to do. A few minutes later, a woman in the audience spoke up. She'd left Iran 15 years before because she wanted a life that wasn't allowed for women there. That life includes higher education, freedom to practice a different religion, and the protection of the police from domestic abuse (though I don't think that directly applied in her case). It was a great reminder of the safety we take for granted and the importance of the work we're doing. When you begin working on an impact startup like Aimee Says, it feels like any contribution will help. It's like volunteering on the weekend - generous, sure, but uncommitted. After a while, however, you become part of the infrastructure. Instead of your presence being a net gain, your absence is a net loss. You're no longer just helping to clear the trail, you're a part of the trail. Aimee Says is at that point. If we stumble, people will get hurt. Hundreds of people every day use Aimee to cope with their abuse, plan for their safety and the safety of their children, and prepare to confront their abusers in court. They are trying to live normal lives, but that normalcy requires an act of heroism. We're trying to make that heroism a little easier. It's overwhelming to me to know that someone in Iran is saying things to Aimee that they can't say out loud, that a woman in New York asked Aimee to help her protect her daughter from her husband, and that Aimee is helping a woman in Boulder who just wanted to be a mom at a soccer game, but for her, that required confronting the man who used to do terrible things to her. We want to build Aimee Says into a company with >$10 Million+ in revenue, then >$100M, then >$1B. We want to show investors that impact investing isn't charity - that addressing social problems isn't a tax on success, but integral to it. If two co-founders, some friends, and a few bucks can serve 10K+ people in less than a year, then what can we accomplish as a billion dollar leviathan? But we're going to need help. We need a team. To get a team, we need money. We're seeking relationships with Foundations that can support our charitable work, and Angel Investors who believe doing good is good for business. Thank you to the woman who explained last night what it means to live under violence and oppression. To the millions of victims of domestic abuse, we're here to help.
