Understanding the rules of hyphens, especially when using them with adverbs, can be tricky. I tackle this subject with the help of the trusty Chicago Manual of Style in this week’s edition of The Writing Resource; https://zurl.co/m3MY8 #Punctuation #Adverbs #Hyphens #Writing #Editing #Copyediting #Freelancing #RightTouchEditing

Recently, I attended a fascinating OED webinar on how pop culture influences mainstream language. As a language nerd and editor, I was struck by the patterns of which terms stick and which fade away. Some terms become so mainstream that people understand them without knowing their origin (think "mini me"). Others, especially those tied to physical products (like "lightsaber"), gain familiarity through real-world presence. The most interesting finding? Words from pop culture generally fall into three categories: ✏ Terms that broaden beyond their original meaning ("Jedi" now means any expert, not just a Star Wars warrior) ✏ Existing words that gain new, more popular meanings ("muggle," "minion") ✏ Context-specific words that often fade away (sorry, "Kenergy") What does this mean for writers and editors? Before using pop culture references in your work, consider: 1. Mainstream recognition: Is the term widely understood outside its original context? 2. Longevity: Has the term stood the test of time, or is it tied to a fleeting trend? 3. Audience fit: Will your readers appreciate and understand the reference? The goal isn't to avoid pop culture terms entirely—they can add color and connect with readers. But choosing the right terms at the right time helps ensure your writing remains accessible and relevant. What's your take? Have you noticed pop culture terms enriching or complicating your writing? #WritingTips #AmEditing #WritingCommunity

"Tact, sensitivity, and other soft skills are a significant part of what editing entails. Proofreading requires a lot of technical knowledge. Naturally, familiarity with style sheets is necessary, as is access to dictionaries and various resources. However, a substantial aspect is the manner in which you collaborate with another person," Leslie Vermeer elucidates in an interview with Lucy Kenward; https://zurl.co/vVMV #Editing #AmEditing #FreelanceEditing #AmFreelancing
