Big news as Google promises big data to run entirely on clean energy by 2030 🚀 🌍 https://hubs.li/Q0307G0m0 📍On Tuesday, Google unveiled a first-of-its-kind strategic partnership...The tech giant and its partners aim to build $20 billion in renewable-energy and energy-storage assets by 2030 that will be “colocated” with data centers. 📍Procuring carbon-free energy has become a top priority as Google and other major tech firms like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta scramble to build the data centers required to achieve their artificial-intelligence visions. 📍The surge (of data centers) are threatening the nation’s decarbonization goals as utilities plan to build gigawatts of new fossil-gas power plants and keep coal plants open longer to support it. Over the past year, tech giants have been eyeing nuclear power as a potential source of round-the-clock carbon-free energy... It’s near impossible for utilities to add energy capacity at the speed tech firms desire; it can take up to five years to build and connect a new energy project, but only a year or so to bring a new data center online. 📍For its part, Google has pledged to power its data centers with round-the-clock carbon-free energy by 2030. That target is now threatened by Google’s growing appetite for power to feed its cloud-computing and AI ambitions and by the increasing challenge of getting new clean power built and connected to the grid. The company reported in July that its emissions rose 13 percent in 2023 from the previous year and 48 percent since 2019. “We’re trying to think about colocation as forward-looking,” Peterson Corio said. “How can we plan for this better, and make sure any new load we’re building, we’re building new generation to match it? We think this is a critical piece of ensuring we continue to do this the right way.” The RethinkX perspective: 🚀 100% solar, wind and battery energy is possible anywhere on the planet and could meet the needs of big data: https://hubs.li/Q0307Kbx0 🚀 By 2030, coal, gas, and nuclear power technologies will be unable to compete with new battery-firm capacity that makes electricity from solar and wind possible all day, all night, all year round: https://hubs.li/Q0307F_s0 🚀 100% solar, wind and battery produces a superabundance of clean energy, which will open the door to extraordinary new possibilities for society, the economy and the environment: https://hubs.li/Q0307CBj0 Become an expert on the inevitable clean energy disruption: https://hubs.li/Q0307B250

How did humans harness the wind? 🌬️🔋🌎 Uncover the Journey of Wind Power, from Ancient Mills to Powering Nations in our latest insight: https://hubs.li/Q02_SP0G0 Today’s modern turbines are the culmination of 100 years of technological development in multiple different disciplines, and they are bigger and more powerful than ever before. Wind-generating capacity is now installed all over the world. It is an important part of the global electricity mix, making up about 8% total generation as of the end of 2023. China is the leader by far, generating more than 885 TWh per year... But the question remains, 🌬️ How did wind go from grinding grain, to lighting lightbulbs, to powering entire countries? 🌬️ How will wind, solar and batteries power our future? 🌬️ How did humans harness the wind? Wind turbines are bigger and more powerful than ever before, the culmination of 100 years of technological development 🚀 But how did we get here? How did humans harness the wind? 🌎 Our global energy system is undergoing a profound transformation. Falling costs and rapid advancements in wind, solar, and battery technologies are disrupting the incumbent fossil fuel-based systems, unlocking cheap, decentralized, superabundant clean energy for all regions that choose to adopt it. Wind power was the first of these technologies to be widely adopted into national energy systems around the world, and is one of the oldest forms of energy generation available; people have been harnessing the wind to do work for thousands of years.... So how did we get to where we are today? How did wind go from simply grinding grain on the farm, to lighting a few lightbulbs, to powering entire countries? Where will wind power take us in the future? Read our latest insight to find out... https://hubs.li/Q02_mPxV0

Waymo (Google) is expanding. Apollo Go is expanding. Tesla is showing off their new Cybercab. But one 100+ year old incumbent is finding it tough to adapt... https://hubs.li/Q02_lt6N0 Why? It's the pattern of disruption. https://hubs.li/Q02_lFpC0 According to the article: 📍 General Motors said on Tuesday it will end robotaxi development at its majority-owned, money-losing Cruise business, a blow to the ambitions of the largest U.S. automaker which had made the advanced technology unit a top priority. 📍 The automaker has invested more than $10 billion in Cruise since 2016. Cruise will be folded into its group working on driver assistance technology. 📍 "You've got to really understand the cost of running a robotaxi fleet, which is fairly significant, and again, not our core business," Barra said on an analyst call. Incumbents around the world are crumbling as new disruptive businesses, economies and leaders are emerging with high drive, creativity and potential to transform our global systems. Why do entrenched leaders, business and nations lag behind? New Google chip takes 5 minutes to achieve what would otherwise take 10 septillion years 🤯https://hubs.ly/Q02_cH5t0 📍Google has built a computing chip that takes just five minutes to complete tasks that would take 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years for some of the world’s fastest conventional computers to complete. "That's a 1,051,200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times disruption!" - Bradd Libby, RethinkX Research Fellow 📍The new chip, called Willow and made in the California beach town of Santa Barbara, is about the dimensions of an After Eight mint, and could supercharge the creation of new drugs by greatly speeding up the experimental phase of development. 📍Reports of its performance follow a flurry of results since 2021 that suggest we are only about five years away from quantum computing becoming powerful enough to start transforming humankind’s capabilities to research and develop new materials from drugs to batteries, one independent UK expert said. Governments around the world are pouring tens of billions of dollars into research. 📍Quantum computing – which harnesses the discovery that matter can exist in multiple states at once – is predicted to have the power to carry out far bigger calculations than previously possible and so hasten the creation of nuclear fusion reactors and accelerate the impact of artificial intelligence, notably in medical science. "For example, it could allow MRI scans to be read in atom-level detail, unlocking new caches of data about human bodies and disease for AI to process," Google said. 📍There are also fears that without guardrails, the technology has the power to crack even the most sophisticated encryption, undermining computer security... The RethinkX View: 🚀 We are on the cusp of the greatest transformation of human civilization we have ever experienced. 🚀 Information, energy, transportation, food, labor and materials are being disrupted at an unprecedented speed and scale. 🚀 The implications for the wider economy, societies and our civilization itself are profound.
