Yesterday was the National Day of Mourning, which has been observed since 1970 on the day of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. Important aspects of its observance include: -Acknowledging the historical and contemporary injustices, inequities, and forms of violence faced by Native American and Indigenous American peoples as European settlers took their native lands by force. -Creating space for Native American and the U.S. Indigenous peoples to not only grieve & honor millions of ancestors lost to colonial genocide, but also to mourn the destruction that colonization has caused to traditional languages, cultures, and ancestral homes. -Education efforts that build awareness about Native American and Indigenous histories while dispelling the mythology of the mainstream Thanksgiving story. Today, we encourage you to spend some time learning more about the Native and Indigenous lands on which you live. We’ll use maps as a starting point. This can be a great activity to explore with friends and family - not just this week or this month, but year-round. Find the full blog post linked in the comments below! *Note: When referring to the peoples who inhabited a given place before the arrival of settlers from other parts of the world or their descendants, implement the terminology used by members of that community (some may prefer American Indian, Indian, Native American, Indigenous, or Native), and use the specific tribal name you are referring to whenever possible (i.e. Athabascan, Seminole, Kanaka Maoli, Diné, Cree, etc).* #reframe52 #allyshipisaverb #deieducation #nationaldayofmourning #nativeamericanheritagemonth

Last week, reframe52 co-founder Karen Chan brought her expertise and insights to the Fireside Chat & Workshop hosted by UNA (United Nations Association - USA), in honor of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day—a global movement celebrating women leaders and innovators who are essential to driving economic development. This empowering event featured a panel of trailblazing women entrepreneurs who shared their unique paths and the lessons learned along the way. Karen contributed her insights on starting not one but two businesses in 2020, navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship, and successfully growing and scaling a business during unprecedented times. She also spoke passionately about her commitment to Gender Equity in entrepreneurship, highlighting the need for actionable strategies to create inclusive spaces and grow opportunities. We at reframe52 have been struggling to find the words this week. Today we offer this list of 10 inextinguishable sources of light in dark times, born out of conversation between educators Danielle Mužina and Beau Shaniuk while co-working through big feelings this morning. We remain committed to our work of stepping back, seeing more, and actively dreaming up and building inclusive, equitable, supportive and liberated spaces with you in our interconnected world. 1. Joy: Unapologetically celebrating moments of happiness, connection, authenticity, belonging, and even the smallest of wins is an act of resilience. Joy is revolutionary and keeps our spirits strong. We deserve to feel it, feed it, and fill ourselves with it whenever we can. 2. Community: Together, we are stronger. Investing in and expanding our support systems and lifts us up and fuels our work. Resisting individualism, we can dig deeper into solidarity, connection, collaboration, mutual aid, getting to know and support our neighbors, and having each other’s backs. 3. Hope: Holding onto the belief that change is possible provides us with the energy to keep pushing forward, even when the journey ahead is long. 4. Defiance: Refusing to accept the status quo, mainstream narratives, and the forces of oppression that seek to make us feel small and defeated by standing unyieldingly against injustice and proudly in our unique personhood reminds us that we have power and agency, no matter the obstacles. 5. Creativity: Creativity sparks new solutions, perspectives, and pathways for change. It fuels innovation, connection, and inspires others to see the world differently. We make art. We tell our stories. We rethink broken systems and forge brighter futures. 6. Social Action: Taking action, no matter how small, reminds us of our capacity to make a difference. Every step counts in the march toward justice and liberation. We invest in diverse forms of action based on our strengths and capacities with persistence, mindfulness, bravery, and faith. 7. Rest as Resistance: Rest is an act of reclamation, especially for those who have historically been denied rest. Taking time to recharge is essential to sustaining long-term social change. 8. Compassion: Empathy for others and a recognition of our interconnectedness connects us on a human level and keeps our work grounded in liberatory love and understanding, motivating us to fight for spaces where everyone is treated with dignity. 9. Learning: Knowledge is power. Staying curious, listening to and learning from one another, broadening our skillsets, and deepening our understanding strengthens our ability to create informed and impactful change. 10. Legacy: We honor the work of those who came before us, and we do this work for those who will come after. Knowing that we are part of a continuum of work in building a better world, fighting injustice, using our voices, and standing tall fuels our determination to stay the course.

Every vote matters. 🗳️ As an eligible voter, you have the right to use your voice to help shape our shared world. For many, the right to vote was hard-won, and for others, barriers still exist. When you cast your ballot, you’re not only influencing policies but also taking action for your loved ones, your community, and future generations. However, we also recognize that Election Day and its aftermath can bring up a lot of complex emotions. With so much at stake, it’s natural to feel anxious or overwhelmed, especially when issues deeply impacting marginalized communities are on the line. Many people experience election anxiety about ballot outcomes and what they will mean for their rights, safety, and future. Remember, it’s okay to acknowledge and feel the weight of this moment. Taking care of our mental health, both on Election Day and in the days that follow, is essential. Employers, workplaces, and team leaders can step up in supporting the mental health of their workforce during this time. Consider giving yourself and your team some extra space and time to process the election’s outcome, including providing extra time to reflect and recharge during and after tomorrow's events. Regardless of the results this week, let’s commit to community care. Let’s show up for one another, offer support, and focus on ways we can continue to make a difference locally and nationally. Someone is counting on you to use your power to build a better world—whether they’re a friend, a neighbor, or a stranger. Together, we can foster resilience and continue working toward positive change, one step at a time. Whether you're voting, supporting others to vote, or caring for yourself and your team through this process, know that every effort counts. #ElectionDay #MentalHealth #EveryVoteCounts #ElectionAnxiety #CommunityCare

Xenophobia isn’t always loud or obvious. Sometimes, it shows up in the form of jokes, subtle exclusions, or stereotypes—and it harms real people. But what exactly is xenophobia? Xenophobia is the irrational fear or hatred of people from cultures or countries different than one’s own, or who are simply perceived as foreign or different from oneself or the dominant cultural group. It often shows up as harmful stereotypes, discriminatory practices, and exclusionary policies that not only hurt individuals in your workplace but weaken our broader society’s fabric. Xenophobic comments, behaviors, and attitudes lead to othering, where the dominant group views and treats a marginalized group as fundamentally different or inferior. In today's blog post, we outline just 5 common ways xenophobia can manifest in professional spaces—and thoughtful ways we can reframe and reflect on these harmful behaviors to foster change. Head to the link in the comments below to read the full post. #xenophobia #inclusiveworkplace #culturalcompetence #belonging #stereotypes
