NEWS: Unrivaled Basketball, a new women’s basketball league, has raised $28 million in Series A funding. The round was led by the Berman family and included notable investors such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Dawn Staley, USC star JuJu Watkins, Fenway Sports Management (FSM) partner and Boston Globe Media CEO Linda Henry, Michael Phelps, and former Milwaukee Bucks minority owner Marc Lasry. Warner Bros. Discovery, which signed a multiyear media rights deal with the league, also participated in the funding, bringing Unrivaled’s total funding to $35 million. Founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, Unrivaled will feature a 3-on-3 format designed to provide WNBA players a domestic offseason option while addressing the pay gap with their NBA counterparts. The league will include 30 players across six teams, with commitments from stars like Stewart, Collier, Chelsea Gray, Arike Ogunbowale, and Angel Reese. All players will receive equity in the league. Unrivaled’s inaugural season, beginning on January 17, marks another milestone in the growing momentum of women’s sports heading into 2025.
