As we wrap up Q4, we want to take a moment to reflect on the events and gatherings that brought us together this quarter. From holiday parties to candle making classes, here are the highlights: -Raleigh celebrated the season fashionably with a Halloween costume competition! The studio also participated in a Day of Service and a pitch In. -Champaign shared Thanksgiving dinner together, went to a University of Illinois Volleyball game with family and friends, and took a candle making class. -Denver also had a Day of Service, went head-to-head in a Chili and Pie competition, and celebrated the end of a successful year with a Holiday Party. -Chicago celebrated with a Halloween and a Holiday party this year! -Finally, Indy had a Halloween party & costume competition and had a Holiday party. Sleigh! A special thank you to our culture team for organizing these wonderful events. We are very appreciative of them for bringing our studios together. We are excited to see what 2025 will bring! #RATIOCulture

That’s a wrap! The RATIO-led Graduate Design Studio with the Illinois School of Architecture gathered for final reviews at the Eagle’s Nest in Temple Hoyne Buell Hall. Instructed by Adam Groth and Nita Christopher, the studio focused on contextual, community-driven, and sustainable design thinking. It was a packed day with 7 student groups presenting their concepts, process, and analytical building performance information leading up to the design of a Community Center in Tuscola, IL. Graphics, animation, and physical building models were used to demonstrate their unique responses to the petals of the Living Building Challenge. We thank ISoA professors Kevin Hinders, Rick Strand, and Julie Zook, University of Arkansas professor Ken McCown, and Jessica Gilbert, GBBN for their insightful juror contributions. Additionally, we want to thank Francisco J. Rodríguez-Suárez, FAIA, for inviting us to lead the studio. We found a lot of joy in mentoring and are excited to see what the students do next. #DesignforImpact #ISoA

Bottleworks District in Indianapolis, Indiana has been acknowledged once again as a global example of design excellence. As mentioned in the Urban Land Institute’s 2024 Global Awards for Excellence, Bottleworks District is one of seven excellent development efforts in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, including projects from the Europe and Asia Pacific regions. The project has been recognized for its inclusive design, innovative funding models, adaptive reuse, and sustainability, reigniting a previously untouched destination. The once historic Coca-Cola plant was converted into a luxury hotel, expansive food hall, and event venue, restoring the building’s facades with original Art Deco details. The redevelopment re-established isolated surrounding neighborhoods to Massachusetts Avenue’s amenities, making it the go-to destination for Indianapolis locals and future tourists. This project exemplifies how thoughtful urban development can preserve a city’s history while revitalizing a community. Arizona, here we come. Our Hospitality and Mixed-use experts Clay Markham and Angie Wallin are headed to ICSC+CENTERBUILD in Phoenix on Dec. 3-6 to see friends and connect about what’s driving innovation in commercial real estate. 

We recently broke ground on the Bailey College of Engineering & Technology addition and renovation at Indiana State University. This project will modernize the original 1980s facility, propelling ISU into a new era of innovation and reinforcing its role as a leader in technology and design education in the Midwest. By creating an environment that supports cutting-edge research and hands-on learning, the renovation will address the national demand for more #STEM professionals and help attract top talent to the state. The new design upgrades existing technology in labs and classrooms, facilitates new program spaces for civil and mechanical engineering, envisions new design studios and teaching labs, broadens the capacity for computer technology, and provides new support space including design workshops, maker spaces, and student breakout spaces throughout the facility. RATIO is the design architect, interior designer, and landscape architect. The project is scheduled for substantial completion in 2027. My message as board chair is that we build up each other in everything we do in the Construction Specifications Institute. Only a few more days until Tradeline, Inc.’s University Science and Engineering Facilities 2024 Fall Conference in Arizona. Higher Education Leaders Brock Roseberry, AIA / LEED AP and Rebecca Hinz, RID, IIDA will present with Greg Graham, Director of Facilities Planning / University Architect at Ball State University on November 15th. Their session explores how Ball State University expanded Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPE) to health and science disciplines, leading to a new academic science quadrangle. They will break down their collaborative approach to uniting departments, facility needs for IPE, flexible design decisions, and the impacts of a community clinic and sustainability initiatives.
