About us
pyOpenSci promotes open and reproducible research through peer-review of scientific Python packages. We also build technical capacity by providing a curated repository of high-quality packages and enabling scientists to write and share their own software. We hope to foster a greater sense of community among scientific Python users so that we can help each other become better programmers and researchers. See our list of Python packages for an idea of the open-source projects that pyOpenSci has assisted. pyOpenSci is being modeled after the successful rOpenSci community. We were feeling ✨ inspired ✨ and dove into our archives for this week's newsletter, and we couldn't say it better than our Executive Director and Founder, Leah Wasser, Ph.D.: Free and open source software tools are the foundation for thousands if not millions of scientific workflows. Yet, it is rare that users fully understand it’s importance in moving science forward. Here, I discuss the value of free and open source software for science; why you as a scientist should care; and what pyOpenSci is doing to try to support Python scientific tools for science. #Python #OpenSource #OpenScience #FOSS #pyOpenSci

We are launching our first pyOpenSci Open Science Fall Festival! This is a training event where you will learn how to 1. Write cleaner, more modular and package-able code 2. Package your Python code 3. Publish your Python code to and install your code from PyPI, Conda-forge and GitHub. And get a DOI so you can cite your code too. 4. Create reproducible interactive reports and documents using Quarto! Each day includes afternoon office hours to help you through any kinks that you experience in the morning. Scholarships are available. This is a paid conference-like training event that kicks off with a keynote talk that is free to attend for everyone.

We have such an incredible contributor community at pyOpenSci Felipe M. 's contributions include infrastructure that is empowering the scientific #python community to translate our python packaging guidebook and tutorials to other languages. In addition to other work, Felipe kicked off the Spanish translation process. And now we have a Japanese translation underway! This is the beauty of #opensource community work. You never know what direction it will go. But you always know that it will move in a direction that is amazing and profoundly impactful!
Welcome to the first edition of pyOpenSci’s Community News newsletter, where we summarize and share conversations, contributions, and news related to our diverse and vibrant community!
