Last night, I had the pleasure of attending my first PRSA Chicago event, the 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 Roundtable. Speakers Ken Li 🎾, Jacqualyn Laughlin and Mark Revermann did a fantastic job guiding us through what it means to be confident in the workplace, what the professional world looks like post pandemic, and how we can best present ourselves as PR pros early on in our careers. I’m so thankful for events such as this one, especially as a recent college graduate and emerging communications professional. The opportunity to gain this kind of perspective is always appreciated, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow alongside such a welcoming community of people!

This year was my second year attending the The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations' Summit and Milestones in Mentoring Gala! As expected, I learned a lot more about the use of AI in PR and how we can use it as a tool moving forward. I also had a BLAST exploring the Wndr Museum (see our optical illusion picture below!) It was a pleasure to meet the emerging leaders and talk with current PR professionals to get career advice moving forward in my senior year! Thank you to Bill Imada, Facundo Luque, Grant Deady, Emma Gresser, M.A. and Brian Price for your helpful insights! While in Chicago, my classmates Steven Flowers, Ava Steffens, Hailey Eifert and I attended PRSA Chicago's Night at the Field Museum event! We had a blast exploring the museum after hours, seeing Andrew Krause and Mckenna Fleming and meeting Phillip M. Keene - MBA, MA and Matt Batt. Thanks to all who engaged and made the Summit and Gala a success and a huge thanks to Southern Illinois University's School of Communication Studies for supporting us in attending! Dr. Rebecca Walker, Dr. Nilanjana Bardhan and Sandy Pensoneau-Conway.

If you second-guess your own recommendations, are too self-critical, and/or generally doubt yourself, know this: 👉 You are not alone. This is the core message I wanted to share w/a group of rising #pr professionals at an event sponsored by PRSA Chicago. I asked the 30+ attendees to write down areas where they lacked self-confidence on post-its. Everyone wrote something down. In other words, everyone felt there was some area where they were lacking confidence. I received 58 responses--an average of about 2 per person. I read all of the responses out loud. Here were a few examples: ❇️ Afraid of being wrong ❇️ Leading others and seeming experienced at it ❇️ Hard to say no to requests ❇️ Hard to read people ❇️ Telling account leads “no” or expressing realistic timelines ❇️ Difficult to disagree with higher-ups ❇️ I’m a perfectionist Can you relate to any of these? Most likely, you can. So…now what? Here’s one idea: form a professional peer mastermind. Here’s why: ❇️ People in similar situations feel instant trust with each other—nearly everyone lacks confidence in some area, so we’re all in the same boat! ❇️ Others can see the blind spots you can’t (or won’t)—we’re often too hard on ourselves, and peers can help us see that. ❇️ Asking for and giving help both boost confidence—this is scientifically proven. Your fellow masterminders don’t have to be close friends or family. In fact, people often listen more to those w/whom they have “weak ties.” I’d love for you to share in the comments: Where do you feel you could use more confidence? Let’s remind each other that we’re not alone. PS. If you prefer a more private approach to boosting your confidence, let’s chat. Michelle Jimenez Olivia Cohen Madeline Brod Anthony M.
