Empowering adults through literacy.
About us
ProLiteracy believes every adult has a right to literacy. We develop and promote adult literacy learning, content, programs and advocacy to help adult learners. ProLiteracy works with our members and partners, and the adult learners we serve, along with local, national, and international organizations. ProLiteracy helps build the capacity and quality of programs that are teaching adults by: • Advocating for public policies and legislation that benefit adult learners and the people and programs that serve them. • Providing professional development and training, technical assistance, publications, online resources, and credentialing services for program directors, instructors, trainers, and volunteer tutors working with adult learners in the U.S. • Working internationally with existing nongovernmental agencies to create programs that combine native language literacy lessons with community projects related to the environment, economic self-sufficiency, education, health, family literacy, and peace/conflict resolution. • Publishing educational materials that address the learning needs and difficulties of adult learners and of youths in grades 6-10. ProLiteracy produces the only weekly news source written in plain English. • Sponsoring an biennial conference. ProLiteracy is the result of the 2002 merger of Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America.

The new data from the PIAAC Survey of Adult Skills, released last week, provides a snapshot of the skill levels of adults around the world. In the US, we are at a crossroads in which we have the chance to leverage these results to invest in adult education and create a stronger and more sustainable future for our country. ➡️ We invite you to share this new information widely and to use it to advocate for change. ➡️ The National Coalition for Literacy joined us in publishing this press release: https://hubs.la/Q0301SF30

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Ruth Colvin, a legend and literacy rights champion. For 63 years, Ruth's foresight and dedication empowered and inspired millions of adults with low literacy skills through her leadership of Literacy Volunteers of America, now ProLiteracy. Ruth passed away in August at the age of 107, and we are forever grateful for her legacy and resolve to fight for the power of adult literacy. Adult literacy practitioners notice that many students come to them anxious and stressed as a result of past trauma, chaos, or violence. Yet, research is lacking on how psychological stress in adult learners impacts their ability to succeed. In our research journal, we share a study that begins to close that gap.
