Hospitals must balance evaluating clinicians' fitness for safe practice with supporting their mental health, notes Rick Barton in a new article. Broad inquiries into mental health history in credentialing and licensing often discourage healthcare providers from seeking care, fearing stigma or career repercussions. Recent reform efforts, driven by organizations like the Dr. Lorna Breen Foundation, Federation of State Medical Boards, and AMA, aim to eliminate these intrusive questions. While there’s no legal consensus yet, hospitals are increasingly revising policies to reduce stigma and prioritize providers' wellbeing. Advocates argue these reforms will improve both clinician support and patient safety. This article was originally published by the American Health Law Association © 2024.
