☕ Caffeine and Pregnancy: What you need to know! During pregnancy, it’s recommended to limit caffeine to 200mg per day – about two cups of instant coffee. Why? Studies suggest high caffeine intake may increase the risk of miscarriage or low birth weight. But caffeine isn’t just in coffee! It’s also in tea, chocolate 🍫, energy drinks, and even some over-the-counter medicines. Always check labels to avoid exceeding the limit. ✨ Top tip: If you’re looking for alternatives, try decaf options or herbal teas (but check which are safe in pregnancy!). 💬 How do you manage your caffeine intake during pregnancy? 📅 What is a dating scan? A dating scan is typically performed between 8–14 weeks to estimate your due date, confirm the baby’s heartbeat 💓, and check for multiple pregnancies. While reassuring, they’re not always precise. 🔍 Are dating scans accurate? Research shows that only 4% of babies are born on their due date, with most arriving between 37–42 weeks. Early scans (8–12 weeks) are more accurate, but as pregnancy progresses, ultrasound estimates can be off by up to 2 weeks 📊. 💡 Why this matters: Focusing too much on your due date can lead to unnecessary anxiety or interventions later in pregnancy. Flexibility is key! Most babies come when they’re ready. ✨ What happens during the scan? Your baby’s size is measured to estimate gestational age. Scans can be done: Across your tummy (transabdominally). Internally (transvaginally) for clearer images. 📩 Questions? ✨ The Zwischen: A Sacred Space in Pregnancy ✨ The final days of pregnancy are often challenging, filled with physical discomfort and emotional uncertainty. Many women feel caught in a difficult space, longing for the end yet sensing the profound significance of this time. This period, known as "The Zwischen," is where you’re neither here nor there—a sacred, transformative space where the known meets the unknown. Inspired by Jana Studelska, CPM/LM,, we embrace this time to rest, reflect, and connect with your deepest wisdom. Though these days can be tough, they are also powerful, marking the transition from one chapter to the next. You are becoming. 🌙💫 #PregnancyJourney #TheZwischen #SacredSpace #PregnancyWisdom #MidwiferyCare #PrivateMidwivesIreland #PrivateMidwives For more insight, visit [The Zwischen](https://loom.ly/gCqshzA

🎥 Let’s talk about Group B Strep (GBS) in pregnancy. Group B Strep is a common bacteria and is usually harmless. However, during pregnancy, it can sometimes cause complications, particularly for babies during birth. 🔍 What you need to know: - GBS testing is not routinely offered in the UK or Ireland but is available privately. - Many women carry GBS without symptoms. - It’s typically detected through a vaginal or rectal swab. - If GBS is present, antibiotics during labour can significantly reduce the risk of passing it to the baby. 💡 If you’re pregnant, speak to your midwife or doctor to discuss whether GBS testing might be suitable for you. Visit GBSS.org.uk for more information and support. #GroupBStrep #PregnancyHealth #AntenatalCare #MaternityCare #BabyOnTheWay #PrivateMidwivesIreland #PrivateMidwives

Bleeding during pregnancy can feel alarming but it’s not always a sign of something serious. Light spotting is relatively common and may be linked to implantation, hormonal changes, or cervical sensitivity, particularly after sex. However, it’s crucial to understand when bleeding could indicate a more serious issue: Early pregnancy: Could be due to implantation, miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy. Later pregnancy: Causes may include placental issues, cervical changes, or the onset of labour. Always seek advice if you experience bleeding, especially if: The bleeding is heavy or accompanied by pain. You pass clots or tissue. You feel faint, dizzy, or unwell. Bleeding in pregnancy isn’t always preventable, but quick action can make a big difference in ensuring the best outcomes for you and your baby. 💬 If you’ve experienced bleeding in pregnancy, you’re not alone. ✨ Antenatal ultrasound scans are an important part of pregnancy care, offering a glimpse into your baby’s development. However, it’s worth understanding both their benefits and limitations. Here’s what you need to know: - Scans are helpful for checking your baby’s position, heartbeat, and growth, as well as identifying conditions like placenta praevia or multiple pregnancies. - That said, measurements like estimated weight are not always accurate, especially in the third trimester, where errors of up to 15% are possible. - Some findings might cause unnecessary worry, while others could miss certain issues. Ultrasounds are just one tool in your pregnancy care. They can provide valuable insights, but it’s important to discuss the results with your Private Midwife or doctor and ask questions if you’re unsure. Save this post for later and share it with other parents-to-be. ✨ Cholestasis of Pregnancy: Know the Signs! ✨ Cholestasis of pregnancy (also known as intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy or ICP) is a liver condition that affects the flow of bile and can occur during pregnancy. It’s vital to recognise the symptoms and seek advice from your midwife or doctor as soon as possible. Here are the key signs to look out for: 👉 Intense itching, often worse at night (typically starts on the palms of your hands and soles of your feet but can spread). 👉 Dark urine, even if you’re well hydrated. 👉 Pale or grey stools, caused by changes in bile flow. 👉 Extreme fatigue that feels beyond normal pregnancy tiredness. 👉 Nausea or loss of appetite that isn’t typical. 👉 Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), although this is less common. If you’re experiencing any of these, don’t wait—speak to your healthcare provider. Cholestasis needs careful monitoring and treatment to protect both you and your baby. Remember, your Private Midwife is here for you to provide evidence and information so you can make informed decisions on your care. For further information and support, visit ICP Support: https://loom.ly/yI_gzrM, a brilliant resource for understanding and managing this condition. 💛 💡 Save this post to refer back to and share it with a mum-to-be who might need to know. Together, we can help raise awareness about this important topic. 🌟 #PregnancyHealth #CholestasisOfPregnancy #PregnancyAwareness #UKMidwife #PrivateMidwife #PregnancySupport #PregnancyComplications #MaternityCare #ExpectingMums #BumpToBaby
