Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) are now a critical tool in World Rugby’s Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocol, helping identify players who may have sustained concussions. At the recent World Rugby Medical Conference, World Rugby Chief Medical Officer Éanna Falvey discussed how iMGs are integrated into the assessment process, alongside other evaluation methods, to elevate player safety on and off the field. 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙮: At OPRO, we’re marking a significant milestone— over the last 12 months we’ve made 10,000+ smart mouthguards, in collaboration with Prevent Biometrics embedded with their revolutionary technology. Each smart mouthguard is made bespoke to each player’s teeth and detects head acceleration in real-time, adding a critical layer of protection and data-driven insight to player welfare. Mandated in elite rugby since January 2024, they’re helping shape a safer future of the sport and we are delighted to be contributing towards this. #PlayerWelfare #SportsSafety #MilestoneMonday #SmartMouthguards #SportTechnology

As instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) gain global adoption, one of our longest standing partnerships has been right here in Minnesota. Minnetonka youth football players have access to the same head impact detection technology used by professional organizations, providing objective data on head accelerations in games and practices. The technology plays a vital role in protecting youth athletes and fostering a safer future for the next generation of players. Earlier this year, we spoke with Yahoo Sports regarding World Rugby's use of our instrumented mouthguards, supported by OPRO Mouthguards, to help detect head impacts in-game. In the article, the NFL’s longest-serving neurosurgeon and current advisor to Prevent, Joseph Maroon MD, discussed how he sees the technology moving downstream and eventually being used by all youth coaches and players, not only mandated at the elite level of rugby. World Rugby and Prevent Biometrics have agreed to a three-year extension of the Head Impact Assessment (HIA) protocol that mandates all elite-level players to wear Prevent’s instrumented mouthguards (iMGs). The mandate, which has been in effect since January of this year, required a $2.4 million dollar investment from World Rugby to outfit 8,000 elite players worldwide. The technology has since become an integral part of their off-field head injury assessment for players. The extension was first announced by World Rugby Chief Medical Officer Éanna Falvey at the World Rugby Medical Commission Conference last week. The partnership reinforces World Rugby’s commitment to advancing player welfare and their position as a leader in managing head injuries in contact sports globally. This extension builds off of the roll out of almost 8,000 impact monitors across the globe in 2024. With the help of our manufacturing partner, OPRO Mouthguards, assuring a comfortable and well fitting mouth guard, we have had incredible compliance across the professional game.
