Hyperscale datacenters are transitioning to 800G and must overcome cable interconnect challenges such as reach, power, latency, and cost. Passive direct-attached copper cables are too short and bulky, while active optical cables are too expensive and power-hungry. David Kuo spoke with William Wong of Electronic Design about Point2’s new P1B121 smart retimer and how it offers lower power, lower latency, and lower cost than today’s retimer options to address these cable interconnect challenges. Check it out here:

Today, we announced the next generation of our Smart Retimer system-on-chip (SoC) for 800G AEC applications for AI clusters in hyperscale datacenters. This Smart Retimer integrates eight-unidirectional SerDes channels that support 112G PAM4 and 56G NRZ data rates while consuming 2X lower power, 20X lower latency, and 40% lower cost when compared to other PAM4 DSP retimers. Why does this matter? Because AI and ML workloads account for nearly 20% of datacenter electricity today, and hyperscalers need solutions to alleviate datacenter operations, boost energy efficiency, and improve sustainability for future interconnect infrastructure. Hyperscalers face a Goldilocks-like dilemma. Copper-based interconnects are too short and thick and optical interconnects are too power-hungry and expensive. The "just-right" solution? e-Tube. e-Tube uses radio wave transmission over a dielectric waveguide made of common plastic material, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
