🌟 Deepening Community Connections: A Dive into the Personal Support Network Model 🌟 In our latest webinar in the Planning and Facilitation Collaborative, we delved into the transformative potential of the Personal Support Network model, an innovative approach to fostering enduring support systems for individuals with disabilities. This session highlighted the core principles that make personal support networks both unique and effective: trust, reciprocity, and inclusivity. Key insights from our discussion: Trust is essential, not just in initiating but in sustaining relationships within personal networks. Our dialogue included practical tips for rebuilding trust where it's been eroded and establishing new, resilient connections. Reciprocity drives engagement, emphasizing that every network member has valuable contributions to make. This mutual exchange enhances the strength and sustainability of the network. Inclusivity ensures diversity, enriching the network with a wide range of experiences and perspectives, which in turn fosters a more supportive environment. Thank you to all participants for their engaging contributions and for sharing their experiences and strategies. Your insights are crucial as we strive to create more inclusive communities through active and engaged personal support networks. Stay tuned for our next session, where we will continue to build on these principles and share more about the powerful impact of well-structured support networks.

This week, as part of the Planning and Facilitation Collaborative, we kicked off a seven-week workshop on Building and Sustaining Personal Support Networks, and the first session set a powerful tone for the journey ahead. We explored how personal connections shape our lives and can be nurtured into lasting support systems, especially for those who may be more vulnerable to isolation, like people with disabilities or those who are aging. 🔗 Sharing Stories of Support We began with participants sharing personal stories about receiving help—from neighbours offering childcare in tough times to a dad coming through during a storm. These moments highlighted how support often comes in small, everyday ways and reminded us that both formal and informal relationships are crucial for sustainable networks. ❤️ Why Personal Support Networks Matter We discussed how personal support networks made up of friends, loved ones (not just professionals), are essential for emotional well-being and resilience. For those facing challenges, meaningful, unpaid relationships help avoid isolation and offer support that goes beyond professional care. 🖼️ Real-Life Networks: More Than Just Smiles We explored real-life examples of support networks that go beyond social gatherings. Behind the photos of celebrations were intentional planning, shared responsibilities, and deep connections that ensure individuals have someone to turn to in times of need—often in critical roles like trusted confidants or supportive decision-makers. 🎯 The Power of Intention A key takeaway? Intentionality. Building a personal support network doesn’t happen by accident—it takes effort. By investing time in our connections, we build a foundation for both emotional and practical support that sustains us in the long term. 🌟 Looking Ahead We’re excited for the weeks to come as we explore trust, inclusivity, and practical exercises like mapping our networks to strengthen relationships. The goal: to help everyone build a sustainable, evolving personal network of support. Final thought: People need people. Think about a time someone supported you—how did it impact your relationship? How can you apply that experience to strengthen your own support network? If strengthening the personal network for yourself or someone you love has been on your mind lately, please connect. We'd love to chat more. #FacingTheFutureTogether

We had the opportunity to host @Barb Swartz-Biscaro from Helen Sanderson Associates at our monthly Learning Community Event. We had such an impactful conversation about living and dying well with Barb. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with the group.
I had the great pleasure of being a guest speaker at the @Planning and Facilitation Collaborative Learning Community monthly series yesterday afternoon. I was sharing all of the roles that I hold but most specifically spoke about the End of Life Doula role. Here are some key takeaways: ~ planning is about holding space for people, having deep conversations and letting those conversations lead our actions ~ person-centred planning is not just for people with disabilities, its for all of us when we need it ~ grief is messy and horrible but not bad, create space for yourself to grieve ~ family dynamics are messy, don't be afraid of the tough conversations ~ let go of assumptions or ideas, step back and listen to what the person wants, even if it hurts Rebecca Pauls mentioned Max Neill during the session and his end of life timeline that was very intentional and specific. I have shared it here for you. Max was an inspiration to many in life and death. I left the session feeling such joy and gratitude that I have been called to this work. I have such appreciation for everyone having these tough conversations and honouring people in life and death. Our goal is also ways to live a good life, living a good death is also important. If you haven't seen or used our living well resources reach out for more information. They are not only about planning for end of life but also living a good life while we still have time.
