Representatives of Mainspring Energy visited Pittsburgh in preparation for constructing their new linear generator manufacturing facility adjacent to Pittsburgh International Airport. Mainspring’s project will generate a $175 million investment and create almost 300 construction and over 600 permanent jobs. Craig Gordon, head of Global Policy and Regulatory Affairs at Mainspring, presented an overview of their project at CCAC’s West Hills Center to stakeholders, including representatives from federal, state, and local governments. He discussed the technology, current customers, and next steps for the Pittsburgh project. 

Transformative federal investment and support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania pave the way for Powerex Inc. to expand its semiconductor manufacturing operations in the Pittsburgh region. Located in Youngwood, Pa., Powerex will bring jobs to the region while growing Pennsylvania’s chip manufacturing industry. The future of energy is being built in Pittsburgh – literally – as Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) expands in our region. A new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility will be constructed, starting next year, where advanced switchgear will be produced to modernize the grid, increase power reliability and decrease carbonization. The Pittsburgh region is flying high when it comes to innovation, including at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) where the xBridge Innovation Center is creating runways for startups and entrepreneurs that are ready to test and deploy new technologies focused on smarter airports … “airports of the future,” for which PIT is a model.

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced an $87 million Advanced Manufacturing and Recycling Grant to California-based Mainspring Energy, which will create a manufacturing facility in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It will be the first high-volume linear generator manufacturing operation in the U.S. and bring 600 jobs at the new facility. “… the Pittsburgh region could not be better positioned to be a partner in delivering novel and sustainable solutions to meet the power needs of a world where energy transition is a priority.
