The International Legal Honor Society

About us

Phi Delta Phi is the oldest legal organization in continuous existence in the United States, predating even the American Bar Association. It was founded in 1869 at the University of Michigan School of Law by four law students, who at the urging of their faculty, endeavored to create an association that would foster scholarship, civility, and ethical conduct in our profession. Since that time, Phi Delta Phi has grown beyond the borders of the United States to Canada, Latin America and Europe. Phi Delta Phi celebrates academic excellence and embraces the finest attributes of professionalism and scholarship. Since our founding, Phi Delta Phi has emphasized to students and lawyers alike the importance of our calling. Our active membership is drawn from those students of the law who not only have shown themselves companionable, but have manifested ability and industry in legal study. Similar to membership in Phi Beta Kappa in the undergraduate colleges and universities, membership in Phi Delta Phi is a mark of honor and distinction that follows one throughout life. Academic achievement alone is not sufficient to give rise to an invitation to join Phi Delta Phi. Integrity, service, and excellence in all facets of human experience are considered factors for membership. In the words of our Phi Delta Phi forefathers, we intend that those so selected shall lead the legal profession. Once accepted, a member of Phi Delta Phi will be recognized as one whose moral compass, academic ability, and personal integrity is beyond reproach. In other words, membership is a mark of distinction.

  • Meet the Phi Delta Phi Member of the Month for December 2024: Josh Bretthauer of Kent Inn at the University of Michigan Law School. Josh Bretthauer is a second-year law student at the University of Michigan Law School. At Michigan, Josh is proud to serve as the president of the Kent Inn of Phi Delta Phi, where he and his board have overseen dramatic improvements in the organization and security of the chapter. Outside the Inn, Josh is passionate about the practice of environmental law and shaping our social infrastructure toward a more sustainable future. He is a Co-Chair of Michigan’s Environmental Law Society and serves as an Associate Editor of Michigan’s Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law. After spending last summer contesting energy rate increases in Michigan at the University of Chicago’s Abrams Environmental Law Clinic, he works now as a part-time extern with the DOJ’s Environment and Natural Resources Division. At Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Josh majored in environmental studies and political science. His studies took him from researching glacier health in Alaska, to learning permaculture practices in rural Montana, to mapping climate vulnerability locally in Portland. Between college and law school, Josh was introduced to law as a corporate paralegal at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York, where he assisted on matters relating to M&A and private equity funds. Outside Michigan’s law quad, Josh can be found organizing pickup soccer games, playing piano and unnecessarily complicated board games, and going on outdoor adventures whenever possible.
