Great 3 racing days for PoliMOVE in Yas Marina…with a sour end!
After two months of preparation, PoliMOVE team of Politecnico di Milano entered the final 3-days of AbuDhabi Autonomous Racing League competition.
Day 1 (25/4): PoliMOVE gets the first position in the officially timed pre-qualy, with a great 1:57:854 lap time (still the best lap time of all the competing teams) and qualifies 1st for the Attack-Defense final.
Day2 (26/4): PolMOVE wins the Attack-Defense competition in the final against Technical University of Munich, with a thrilling end on turn6.
Day3 (27/4): PoliMOVE wins the Time Trial competition, with a 2:00.653 that entitles PoliMOVE for the “special performance prize” (within 115% of the lap-time of an F1-driver).
Final race: PoliMOVE in pole position, but – after a stop of the race due to an issue on TUM car - our journey abruptly ends with a dramatic spin with (very) cold tires at 240+ kph at the end of the main straight in the first “go” lap. The final goes to TUM (congrats!) after a restart and a technical issue on the car of Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia.
I wish to thank my fantastic team once again (Riccardo Poli, Matteo Pierini, Riccardo Vianello, Riccardo Donati, Giovanni Ghirardini, Simone Gabrielli, Luca Cattaneo, Alessandro Riva, Andrea Borsatto, Federico Sarrocco, Paola Hasalliu, with special mention to team leaders Rodrigo Senofieni and Paolo Fusco); I’m so proud of you! Thanks to my colleagues and PoliMOVE co-advisors Matteo Corno and Giulio Panzani. Thanks Brandon Dixon, for making the trip to be with us with your unvaluable experience. Thanks to all the other teams that worked so hard to make this competition happen.
Huge thanks to our sponsors&partners: MOVYON (thanks Benedetto Carambia and Roberta Loiacono for being with us at Yas Marina ) and to Whysol Investments (thanks Alberto Bitetto for trusting and supporting the team of “your” Politecnico di Milano!)
Congrats and a big thank to the ASPIRE team (special thanks to Stephane Timpano and Tom McCarthy, with Nicola Palarchi and Piers Masarati) for the huge organization effort and for the magnificent environment they built and developed in an incredibly short amount of time.
PS: I wish to celebrate an anniversary: exactly two years before the A2RL race (what a coincidence!!!!), on 27/4/2022, PolMOVE established the current world speed record (309,2kph) for an autonomous car , on the iconic landing facility of the Space Shuttle, at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral (thanks Indy Autonomous Challenge for having first nurtured PoliMOVE and many other teams, to grow and learn in the new and unexplored territory of high-performance ground-vehicles autonomy).
