    Imagine a future where your doctor prescribes nutrient-dense whole foods instead of another pill. That vision just got a major boost with a groundbreaking Consensus Statement in JAMA, outlining essential nutrition competencies to integrate into medical school training. The competencies would be included in licensing and board certification exams, equipping doctors to prevent, treat, and reverse chronic disease using food as medicine. This is a cause close to my heart and central to the work I’m championing with the Food Fix Campaign. We’re pushing for updates to the NIH Nutrition Curriculum Guide, launching a Medical School Curriculum Initiative, and advocating for tying federal grants to nutrition training. By making nutrition a cornerstone of medical education, we can equip doctors with the tools they need to combat the chronic disease epidemic.     Did you know that the tobacco giants are the inventors of ultra-processed food? Since my deep dive into regenerative agriculture in 2018 I am also getting a deeper understanding of our food system and it is incredible how messed up it is. One thing that blows my mind is how bad & addictive ultra-processed food is for us and I started wondering how did this actually happen? Well it turns out Philipp Morris, the same company that mastered creating nicotine dependency, turned its expertise toward the food industry when it realised the public is onto it with regards to how addictive smoking is. In 1988 Philippe Morris, acquired the Kraft group, which later became Kraft Heinz for 12.9 billion euros. Under Philip Morris, Kraft’s products were engineered to be more irresistible. Sugar, salt, and fat were carefully calibrated to hit that "bliss point"—the exact combination that keeps consumers coming back for more and you eating that entire box of Pringles or Oreos. In other words, they used the same tactics as with cigarettes. Then, when the public image of Philip Morris started to tarnish in the 2000s due to growing awareness of the dangers of smoking, they spun off Kraft in 2007 into a separate company. But guess what? Shareholders of Philipp Morris received shares of Kraft Foods. So the exact same people continued to profit from products that made people sick and addicted, but without all the bad publicity. Evil, but genius. Nowadays the ultra-processed food industry is also applying the same techniques as the tobacco industry in order to prevent regulation and to keep people from finding out how bad it really is. But more on that on another post. Closing off with the real image of an advertisement campaign by Philippe Morris in the 1950s. I guess the equivalent to where we are now in terms of ultra processed food.

    We discussed this on our latest episode of CPG Vibes, BIG BIG news from KeHE Distributors on 11/22, a new program dubbed 'AAP' (administrative allowance program). A flat 2 % off-invoice allowance for specific fees including New item intros, extra performance fees, MCBs, new item set up fees, and lumping fees. My quick thoughts: This is a step in the right direction for sure. UNFI implemented SSI which is a similar program to help brands budget for costs and fees associated with doing business with large national distributors. With all that said, these categories are pretty large and encompassing, so for all the other fees associated with Kehe that can chop down a brand's margin, will this program truly cover it? Likely not, but at least it covers some. What are your thoughts?
