NEWS: Orano Awarded DOE LEU Enrichment Contract. Orano has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy in an award announced yesterday as a supplier of low enriched uranium (LEU) generated by new domestic sources. The DOE selected six companies from which it can sign contracts to procure LEU to incentivize the build-out of new uranium production capacity in the United States. Among the six awardees, Orano is one of only two companies currently producing and providing commercial quantities of enriched uranium to U.S. nuclear reactors. Orano’s significant investment in the design and construction of an American uranium enrichment site would use Orano’s existing modern ultracentrifugation technology. “We are pleased to be part of this DOE award for domestic LEU enrichment supply,” said Jean-Luc Palayer, CEO, Orano USA. “For almost 60 years, Orano has fueled the U.S. and global nuclear reactor fleet with LEU from our French facility in Tricastin. Orano’s Project IKE in Oak Ridge, TN, is applying this same operational expertise and upgraded technology to establish a similar enrichment facility and generate a new reliable and secure American-based supply of enriched uranium.” On September 4, 2024, Orano announced its selection of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as the preferred site for establishing a multi-billion-dollar uranium enrichment facility known as Project IKE. Significant progress is already underway with the DOE land transfer, NRC license submittal preparations, and hiring for open positions. Along with being selected in yesterday’s LEU supply award, Orano was also selected in DOE’s two recent contract awards for high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) enrichment and deconversion to create fuel for future advanced reactors. Since the process for HALEU enrichment includes LEU/LEU+ enrichment, receiving a sufficient level of DOE contract funding would enable Orano to co-locate both production facilities on Orano’s Project IKE site and perform the uranium enrichment with significant cost, efficiency, and security benefits. https://lnkd.in/esygUrZf #ProjectIKE #uranium #LEU #HALEU #advancedreactors

Making good progress on our Project IKE enrichment facility development in Oak Ridge, TN. We completed our first licensing milestone with yesterday's NRC pre-licensing meeting. Keep an eye on our website for updates and open jobs: https://lnkd.in/eRqhBy3Z #ProjectIKE
Yesterday, the IKE project successfully reached the first licensing milestone following our inaugural NRC pre-application meeting! This is a significant step forward as we continue working toward securing regulatory approval and progressing on our journey to deliver new domestic enrichment capacity. The pre-application meeting with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission marked a key moment of collaboration and transparency, allowing us to align on critical aspects of the licensing process. This milestone reflects the hard work and dedication of our incredible team and partners, as well as our commitment to safety. A huge thank you to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and to everyone involved in reaching this achievement. This is just the beginning, and we are excited about the next steps in bringing the IKE project closer to its full potential. Onward and upward! #NRC #ProjectIke

NEWS: Orano’s fabrication facilities in North Carolina achieve ISO 9001 quality certification. Achieving international quality standards reflects modernized manufacturing systems, efficient procedures, and team commitment. The Orano teams manufacture large #NUHOMS stainless steel dry storage used nuclear fuel canisters and packages for the transport of nuclear materials for fuel fabrication, new fuel assemblies, low-level and high-level waste, and #HALEU to support the current and future nuclear fleet. ISO 9001 is a globally recognized standard for quality management that emphasizes risk-based decision-making, continuous improvement, and enhancing the customer experience. Its requirements define how to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve a quality management system (QMS). “Our teams worked hard to establish and perform at this high-quality standard to earn the ISO 9001 designation,” said Rebecca Stewart, president, TN Americas. “Our strong team leadership, skilled workforce, established manufacturing processes, and a strong nuclear safety conscious work environment helped to achieve this certification.” Read more and see the photos: https://lnkd.in/ezcfJyeu Town of Kernersville Kernersville Chamber of Commerce City of Greensboro Greensboro Chamber of Commerce

READING: This Ben Williams "Historically Speaking" guest column connects the past with the present and the future when speaking about Orano's #ProjectIke uranium enrichment facility development: "This positions Oak Ridge to become the nation’s leader for next generation nuclear. In poetic fashion, the renewed focus on nuclear power happening now is giving new life to the former enrichment site and bringing new growth and opportunities to Oak Ridge again." https://lnkd.in/gevkW5_t via David Ray Smith
