Global non-profit: promotes and protects open source software, development & communities through education and advocacy.
About us
Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in. It depends on the liberties delivered by open source licenses. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is the authority that defines Open Source, recognized globally by individuals, companies, and by public institutions. One of our most important activities is as a standards body, maintaining the Open Source Definition for the good of the community. The Open Source Initiative Approved License trademark and program creates a nexus of trust around which developers, users, corporations and governments can organize open-source cooperation.

Some of the world’s largest and most powerful tech companies are coming under fire from organizations such as the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and the The Linux Foundation Foundation for misappropriating the #OpenSource label for marketing, PR, and branding purposes. (Richard Waters Financial Times: bit.ly/3UlBxar). We’re also seeing a significant uptick in the number of once “proudly open source” companies moving away from the original spirit and definition of OS, primarily in pursuit of profits. While some businesses have made a full-on about-face toward proprietary licensing, others have been making minor deviations from OS norms presumably to see how far they can stray before inciting community backlash or suffering negative business impacts. (Michael Larabel: bit.ly/40h4JD7) Open source adherents are notoriously unwavering in their commitment to the movement and rallying the tech industry around a single definition of open source. This is why, no matter how muddy the waters may get, I’m confident that in 2025 the community and its organizations will redouble their efforts toward standardization, tenaciously pursuing open source purity, and in turn, protecting the integrity of the label, the movement, and its foundational ethos.

Open source licenses can be tricky because many packages consume an unknown amount of other packages. We dove into this topic live at All Things Open Conference with Carlo Piana. Check out the full episode: https://lnkd.in/edTSNizF
