Wildlife in action: playtime for Arctic fox pups ❄️ Arctic foxes have the ability to adapt to some of the world’s harshest environments, living in some of the coldest areas in the Northern Hemisphere. The thickness and colour of their fur changes depending on the season, reducing heat loss and helping them to maintain a stable body temperature in freezing conditions. This clip by SILVERBACK FILMS, filmed in Svalbard in Norway, shows two Arctic fox pups playing in the snow - learning skills to help them survive. New to Open Planet: discover vertical farming in New York 🌱 Across the world, unsustainable agricultural practices are contributing to the climate and nature crises – causing land degradation which in turn affects global food security. As we build a more sustainable future, urgent action is needed to transform our food systems and create a model that benefits both people and planet. Vertical farming allows produce to be grown across multiple levels, using nutrient-rich water instead of soil. By using much less land, and 98% less water than traditional agriculture, this method is one example of innovative solutions towards meeting the growing global demand for food in a rapidly changing world. This footage is the latest in our growing collection of clips showing the issues, impacts and solutions relating to our global food system. The story of humanity is deeply connected to the story of our land. We depend on land for our survival – it sustains our economies, lives and livelihoods. But our land is in crisis. 40% of fertile land is now degraded, and droughts have become 30% more frequent and severe since the year 2000 – with dire consequences for millions of people across the world, in particular the most vulnerable. This week during #COP16Riyadh, key negotiations are taking place that can transform the future of our land – turning widespread degradation into global restoration. 🌎 To unlock powerful creative storytelling for change, we’re proud to have launched a new collection of trusted world-class content in collaboration with UNDP.
