About us
Now in its sixth decade of practice, Olson Kundig is a collaborative design practice led by 13 principal/owners whose work includes cultural and museum projects, exhibition design, commercial and mixed-use design (including wineries and sports facilities), private and multi-family residential, hospitality projects, places of worship, interior design, product design and landscape design. With deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, the firm and its team of over 350 work with clients around the world. The firm began its creative existence in 1966 with the architect Jim Olson, whose work at that time centered on explorations of the relationship between dwellings and the landscapes in which they inhabit. Olson started the firm based on the essential ideas that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture, histories, and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Among the firm’s accolades are the 2009 National AIA Architecture Firm Award (as Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects), national and regional design awards from the American Institute of Architects, Jim Olson’s 2007 Seattle Medal of Honor and Tom Kundig’s National Design Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt and his Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Books on the firm’s work include Tom Kundig: Working Title (Princeton Architectural Press, 2020); Jim Olson: Building • Nature • Art (Thames & Hudson, 2018); Tom Kundig: Works (Princeton Architectural Press, 2015); Jim Olson: Art and Architecture (August Editions, 2013); Tom Kundig: Houses 2 (Princeton Architectural Press, 2011); Jim Olson Houses (The Monacelli Press, 2009); and Tom Kundig: Houses (Princeton Architectural Press, originally published in 2006 and re-released in 2021).

In the latest episode of The Market Perspectives podcast, principal/owner Kirsten Ring Murray FAIA, joins host Dean Jones to share her insights into Olson Kundig’s practice, her design philosophy, and the firm’s expanding reach across diverse communities and economies. “The natural environment is a key part of our origins here in Seattle. The core of what we try to do is about quietly understanding how a building’s design can connect to all aspects of the site and optimize that environment. As we’ve grown into a global practice, we’re taking that methodology and applying it to different climates and geographies.” —Kirsten Ring Murray, FAIA Visit the link below to listen to the episode! https://lnkd.in/gCaRmz7Y #Architecture #Design #Podcast

“At the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s Try It Studio, children use kinetic devices to explore the relationship between cause and effect. With the drawing arm, kids experiment by changing a variable and seeing how it impacts their drawings. It’s just one way the museum weaves science, technology, engineering, art, and math into early childhood learning.” –Alan Maskin, Design Principal Visit the link below to learn more! https://lnkd.in/gifJGx-S #Architecture #Design #California Project Team: Alan Maskin, Design Principal; Marlene Chen, AIA, LEE AP, Project Manager; Megan Zimmerman, Project Architect; Crystal Coleman, LEED AP, and Jerome Tryon, Architectural Staff; Ryan Botts, Tessa Crespo and Jared Luther, Exhibit Designers; Sarah Muchow, IIDA, NCIDQ, Interior Design; Mike Lee, Interior Design Staff. In the latest episode of Peak Conversations, principal/owner & founder Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, joins host Jessie Fischer to discuss what it means for architecture to “work,” designing with climate change in mind, and defining an architect’s legacy. “Being an architect is about leaving a legacy of terrific work, and not just one masterpiece. Are you leaving a legacy of great places, great buildings, and great memories for the people who use those buildings? We can’t predict how the buildings we design will be used in the future, but hopefully we leave behind robust, life-altering architecture.” –Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA Visit the link below to listen! https://lnkd.in/gc8dUCc9 #Architecture #Design #Podcast

We’re honored to share that Leach Botanical Garden has received an Award of Merit from the 2024 AIA Seattle Honor Awards for Washington Architecture. This program celebrates design excellence in projects and firms across Washington State. “I’m incredibly grateful to have this project recognized by AIA Seattle,” shares design principal Kevin Kudo-King, AIA, LEED AP. “The pavilion and elevated tree walk at Leach Botanical Garden were intended as simple yet transformative spaces for all community members to connect with nature in new ways, and with each other. I’m proud to share this recognition with our clients and collaborators, and of the inclusive community space we’ve created together.” Additionally, architectural team member Fiki Falola served on the AIA Seattle Young Voices jury. Recently, Design Milk featured a new home in the Bay Area, led by design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, with interiors by NICOLEHOLLIS and landscape by Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture, Inc. Designed for an active family, the home embraces its natural surroundings, creating a private oasis within the landscape that integrates architecture, art, and the outdoors. “This project organizes a home around two very different functions: formal spaces for hosting and entertaining, and much more casual family spaces. The pool creates a link between the low-key activity of the house and the more intense recreational activity of the sauna, outdoor gym, and sport court beyond.” –Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal Click the link below to learn more! https://lnkd.in/g8h2Nu8P #Architecture #Design #California Photos by Douglas Friedman Project Team: Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal; Todd Matthes, Principal/ Project Manager; Charlotte Essex, AIA, CSBA, SEED, Project Architect; Alex Fritz, Associate, Project Architect; Katherine Ranieri, Project Architect.
