"If people have a lawyer when they're facing eviction, more than 80% will be able to stay in their homes." —Sarah Oltmans, Chief of Grant Strategy at Robin Hood Organizations like NYLAG have an incredible partner in Robin Hood as we work with New Yorkers experiencing poverty and crisis. Housing stability is one of the biggest issues facing New Yorkers today, and addressing it requires a holistic approach, legal services being a critical part of keeping people in their homes. NYLAG Vice President Shani Adess went on PIX11's Community CloseUp with Jay Dow to speak about some of NYLAG's immigration work, what we're hearing from the community, and how City policies like shelter stay limits impact our new neighbors' ability to achieve status and establish their lives in the US. One thing's for sure: No matter the rhetoric or efforts to scare our neighbors, NYLAG is still here, working with communities to ensure access to expert, trauma-informed legal services. Now more than ever, our pro bono partnerships are critical to working with as many of our new neighbors as possible in establishing their lives here. Thank you WilmerHale for being so generous with your time and skills!
On December 3, 2024, WilmerHale was proud to host an asylum clinic organized by the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) as part of their Pro Se Plus Project. After receiving training from NYLAG’s staff on the relevant law and administrative procedures, WilmerHale volunteers worked with recently arrived immigrants to prepare their #asylum applications for submission to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Asylum provides a path toward durable protection for those fleeing persecution in their country of origin, and it was our privilege to provide #probono support to these immigrants as they take their latest steps toward a safe home in the United States.

This #GivingTuesday feels different. NYLAG exists because seeking and achieving justice shouldn’t be determined by whether or not someone can afford it. As long as our systems and institutions exacerbate the economic, racial, and social injustices that most harm our communities, we’ll be here fighting back however we can, centering our clients’ needs and goals every step of the way. And while we ask for your support on Giving Tuesday every year, this year feels different — not because our work is changing, but because it’s become even more urgent. This recent election cycle resulted in an incoming federal administration that spent another campaign demonizing and threatening so many of our communities — immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, survivors, the list goes on — with harmful rhetoric and policy proposals. New Yorkers’ ability to access and achieve justice was never going to come down to any one election or policy. But as we prepare for what’s ahead, knowing the promises of the incoming administration, it *can* come down to you. This Giving Tuesday, we're asking you to please give what you can to ensure that New Yorkers can assert their rights and maintain their dignity with a trusted advocate by their side — no matter what the coming weeks and months bring: https://lnkd.in/ejgtc5DF

"Federal lawmakers are running out of time to renew funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program through the federal Farm Bill before the end of the year, ahead of a new Congress in January... [They're] negotiating over the future of SNAP as food insecurity in New York is on the rise." Failing to reauthorize the Farm Bill is a policy choice—and a cruel one at that—inevitably putting more New Yorkers up against a hunger crisis with fewer means to survive it.
