NIH is currently leading the development of a Disability Research Strategic Plan. The plan will identify scientific themes and develop goals and objectives to advance research activities that promote the health and well-being of people with disabilities. As part this process, NIH is engaging with diverse communities to get their input regarding the health and research concerns and unique needs and preferences of people with disabilities. Listen in to the first in a series of discussions on October 30 at 3:30 p.m. ET and register for others at: https://go.nih.gov/ZFhYqG7 #DisabilityResearch #research #science #NIH

A new study co-authored by NIMHD Director Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable and led by researchers in his lab reveals insights into how tobacco biomarkers (substances related to tobacco exposure in blood and urine) vary widely among populations by race, ethnicity, and Latino heritage. For example, smokers of Puerto Rican heritage had higher levels of these markers than Mexican or Central American populations. Smoking cessation programs need to be tailored to address these differences. NIMHD's new research spotlight on peer coaching interventions for Black adults experiencing hypertension was featured in NIH CEAL's recent newsletter! Check out the Research Spotlight and other updates ⬇️
Did you know that more than half of Black adults in the rural Southeastern United States have been diagnosed with hypertension? Distance and high transportation costs can make it difficult for patients to attend regular doctor’s visits to manage their blood pressure (BP). Peer coaching for patients with BP offers guidance from trained community members, and practice facilitation improves clinical outcomes. A recent National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) study found that these methods provide hope for addressing chronic conditions in the most affected areas. Learn more about the study in our latest newsletter: https://bit.ly/3DaUx5B #BloodPressure #CommunityHealth #ChronicConditions

This week marks the four-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 vaccine given. Using the power of community engagement, CEAL regional teams saw a higher rate of COVID-19 vaccination in their communities than in non-CEAL communities. CEAL teams' work during the pandemic highlights how collaboration, trust-building, and culturally tailored outreach can address health disparities. Researchers, community leaders, and community health workers can use CEAL's lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic to inform their efforts in partnering with communities to improve health. Explore the CEAL impact dashboard to find out how different CEAL teams use community engagement and outreach in their communities: https://nihceal.org/impact #COVID19 #NIHCEAL #HealthDisparities

Community health workers and promotores (CHW/Ps) face challenges in addressing mental health needs within their communities, especially when resources and support are limited. The California CEAL Regional Team, led by UCLA, reached over 600 CHW/Ps with their mental health workshop series, supporting CHW/Ps and fostering academic-community partnerships. Read the full spotlight story to learn how their community advisory board is ensuring CHW/Ps are well-equipped to address mental health challenges and how their unique approach supports academic-community partnerships: https://bit.ly/3DofBpk
