New York Bar Leaders Hold Summit to Organize Efforts to Oppose Mass Deportations Without Due Process NYCLA's Officers recently issued a statement announcing the December 5, 2024, summit meeting held by representatives of more than a dozen New York bar associations and legal organizations to coordinate efforts, share ideas, and pool resources in response to the mass deportations that President-Elect Trump has promised as part of his “day one” agenda. “Our organizations have diverse missions,” said NYCLA President Adrienne B. Koch , “but there are certain things we all hold dear. The rule of law is one of them, and as lawyers we have a special responsibility – both individually and collectively – to preserve and uphold it. NYCLA is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the other members of this group in working together toward that shared goal.” The unified efforts of NYCLA and area bar groups were detailed in the New York Law Journal's article New York County Lawyers' Group Pledges Encore Summit to Maintain Due Process in Deportation Proceedings. https://lnkd.in/eYbcA8bv

I was grateful to join the volunteers of the Pro Bono Low Income Tax Clinic at the United States Tax Court calendar call. Notably, the United States Tax Court is the only Federal court where taxpayers can go to without paying the deficiency up front. As we observed, most taxpayers who appear in front of the United States Tax Court are unrepresented and cannot afford to pay an attorney to represent them. Volunteers help unrepresented taxpayers navigate the unfamiliar process of the calendar call. Thanks to Frank Agostino for his exceptional leadership and the New York County Lawyers Association for the opportunity!

NYCLA Officers Urge Gov. Hochul to Sign Death Gamble Bill Governor Kathy Hochul has until December 13 to sign into law the so-called “Death Gamble Bill,” S7567A/A9143. The New York County Lawyers Association’s leadership urges her to do so. Last April, NYCLA issued a statement applauding the introduction of the legislation, which would ameliorate the effects of the “Death Gamble” – an anomaly in our state’s Social Security Law under which, if a judge who is eligible to retire elects to remain in office and then dies while in office, his or her beneficiaries receive a substantially smaller death benefit than they would have received if the judge had retired before his or her death. https://lnkd.in/ejDdCH4G
