Value-based care is a strategy that systematically improves patient outcomes and lowers total cost of care. It also helps physicians get back the joy of practicing medicine. From this week's Fierce Healthcare #DEI Forum, Sean McLaughlin, MD, spoke to Anastassia Gliadkovskaya about the performance track record at Esse Health where a value-based care system has been improving quality and patient satisfaction for decades. "Before I made the transition, my worth was judged based on how many patients came through my office. It didn't matter whether those interactions were meaningful, impactful, or not. [Now I'm asking questions like] how I did I impact my patient's care? How did I make their life better? How did I anticipate problems? I can now deploy resources to care for my patients beyond the four walls of my clinic." #valuebasedcare

In a recent interview with Becker's Healthcare, Michael Dandorph, President and CEO of Tufts Medicine talks about what makes the organization a 'destination workforce', where physicians are empowered to make decisions and move forward in their careers. Decreasing administrative burden is a part of the work Navvis and Tufts are doing together, with a shared goal of reducing physician burnout, one of the top priorities for health systems nationwide. Costs in the commercial health insurance market are rising at an unsustainable rate. Many industry leaders believe advancing commercial value-based payment arrangements with downside risk offers a path forward for creating a financially sustainable payment model while delivering high-quality, whole-person care. But although the need for a sustainable commercial payment model is more urgent than ever, progress has been slow. That’s why Health Evolution’s Roundtable on Commercial Risk-Based Contracting—a multi-stakeholder group primarily comprised of leaders from payer and provider organizations and sponsored by two technology organizations—set out to identify and share key learnings that define win-win arrangements in commercial risk-based contracting and design guidelines to build those contracts. At our 2024 Connect gathering, Roundtable Co-Chair Brian D. Pieninck, President & CEO, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and Roundtable Fellows Christine Donohue-Henry, MD MBA, Chief Population Health Officer, ChristianaCare, and Miles Snowden, MD, EVP of Physician Strategy, Navvis (healthcare), shared some of their key takeaways and perspectives from the effort. "What we've done is try to think through what is in a physician's control and what are the key metrics. The lessons learned along the way are how do you simplify the measures as much as possible with things that are under the physician's control?"
