USNS Robert F. Kennedy (T-AO 208) is delivered! Following the successful completion of sea trails, the Navy accepted delivery of T-AO 208 from General Dynamics NASSCO. The news follows continued progress on the program as the keel was laid on the future USNS Thurgood Marshall (T-AO 211) last week. Operated by Military Sealift Command, T-AOs provide additional capacity to the US Navy’s Combat Logistics Force, increasing fleet underway replenishment capabilities.

More players loading … the Navy’s future force set for growth with a recent keel lay, a delivery and a christening! (Pictures 1-3) The keel for the future USNS Thurgood Marshall (T-AO 211), a John Lewis-class Replenishment Oiler, was laid last week during a ceremony in San Diego with General Dynamics NASSCO. The ship’s namesake, former Justice Thurgood Marshall, was the first African American justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. During the ceremony, the keel was authenticated by the ship’s sponsors, Justice Marshall’s granddaughters, Cecilla L. Marshall and Melonie Tibbs, and his granddaughter-in-law, Alissa Kamens Marshall. (Picture 4) The latest Ship to Shore Connector (SSC), LCAC 111 was delivered to the Navy from Textron Systems on Nov. 27. This new addition to the fleet enhances Navy amphibious capability, providing a vital asset for rapid deployment and logistical support. Capable of carrying a 60 to 75-ton payload, LCACs primarily transport weapon systems, equipment, cargo, and assault element personnel through a wide range of conditions, including over-the-beach. (Picture 5-6) The Virginia-class attack submarine Arkansas (SSN 800) was christened at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII in Newport News, Virginia, Dec. 7. Virginia-class attack submarines’ stealth, endurance, mobility, and firepower enable them to support five of the six core capabilities of maritime strategy—sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence. The submarine’s sponsors are the six women of the Little Rock Nine: Dr. Melba Pattillo Beals, Elizabeth Eckford, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Carlotta Walls Lanier, Minnijean Brown Trickey, and Thelma Mothershed Wair, who became the first people of color to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, after the 1954 landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision to end racial segregation in schools.
