In 2014, NIA-funded researchers began collecting data from responders who worked or volunteered in lower Manhattan, the Staten Island landfill, or barge-loading piers after the World Trade Center attacks. The researchers found that workers and volunteers exposed to dust, chemicals, and other pollutants have a higher risk of early-onset dementia than those who worked in low dust conditions or consistently used personal protective equipment. A team of NIA-funded researchers found that long-term exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), often found in wildfire smoke, may be linked to an increased risk of dementia. Researchers analyzed the electronic health records of more than 1.2 million people age 60 or over and free of dementia from 2008 to 2019. More than 80,000 people in the study received a dementia diagnosis. Learn more about the findings that suggest that PM2.5 from wildfires is a greater risk factor for dementia than PM2.5 from other sources: https://lnkd.in/dXJtyfdB #NIAFunded #Dementia
