Join us on Wednesday morning at 8 AM PST for a live special online press event remembering Libby Caswell. Libby Caswell was murdered on December 11, 2017 in Independence, Missouri. The investigation was botched badly by the Independence Police Department and ruled a suicide. The Alliance’s Justice Project, after a thorough investigation found Libby was murdered and the scene was staged to look like a suicide. Libby’s case is now a training case study in the Alliance’s nationally recognized Hidden Homicides Course. The Alliance and Libby’s mom, Cindy Caswell, continue to advocate for Justice For Libby. Go to the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention’s Facebook page for the live event at 8 AM PST Wednesday morning for the latest information on the murder of Libby Caswell. This week we filmed our training video for SB 989, Joanna's Law, in collaboration with the Sacramento Family Justice Center and the Sacramento Police Department. Joanna's Law is the first suspicious death law in the United States. It becomes effective on January 1, 2025. It creates training and investigation requirements for first responders and death investigators in suspicious death cases where a woman dies prematurely after a history of domestic violence -- often including strangulation. It is based on the misconduct of the Solano County Sheriff's Department in the handling of the death of Joanna Hunter in 2011. Her killer was never held accountable because of the bungled investigation of her death and their botched decision about the manner of death in less than an hour after her husband killed her. Our goal is to see future investigations in California handled properly. Joanna's Law is the first of its kind in the US but it will not be the last. We intend to pass similar laws across the United States. #lastwarningshot

It's Giving Tuesday and we would love donations to support our work on suspicious death cases across America. So many have lost loved ones and don't even have the resources to mourn and bury their sister, daughter, or mother. Our Justice Project team at Alliance for HOPE International is passionately committed to donating our time to get many of these cases re-opened but there are major expenses for court filings, autopsies, DNA testing, and other costs. Will you help us find justice for those who lose their lives after documented histories of domestic violence?

Based on the Alliance’s work in their Justice Project program focused on hidden homicides, researched by Alliance CEO Gael Strack, and written by Alliance President Casey Gwinn, Joanna’s Law, SB 989, must now be implemented across California. Then, we intend to pass similar laws across the country. Suspicious death cases with a history of domestic violence should be investigated as homicides until proven otherwise. Thank you, Senator Angelique Ashby and Senator Susan Rubio for your leadership on SB 989. Joanna’s Law passed unanimously with bi-partisan support. Our Family Justice Center Alliance team was honored to help the State of Delaware plan the first statewide Family Justice Center network! Collaborative communities that focus on victim safety and offender accountability reduce domestic violence homicides and offer powerful pathways to hope and healing for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. When Delaware opens their Centers, victims will be safer and offenders will face greater accountability for their violence -- the research on Family Justice Centers is clear and convincing across the country and around the world. For communities interested in beginning to plan a Family Justice Center, reach out to our team at: [email protected]. https://lnkd.in/gdnzUggh

We will continue to raise awareness about the rise in domestic violence homicides in the United States since 2014. Criminal justice reform has caused spikes in crime including violence against women. "Women are dying at the highest rate in the more than a decade, across America, and no one is talking about it or paying attention. Not a single national or state domestic violence organization has profiled the large and consistent rise in the murders of women since the beginning of bail and jail reform in this country." -- Casey Gwinn. Alliance for HOPE International and our allied Family Justice Centers will continue to focus on the shocking numbers. Women die at very low rates in Family Justice Centers across America but high risk victims who do not get to Family Justice Centers are dying at rates nearly as high as prior to the Violence Against Women Act was passed in 1994. We need to focus on accountability for stranglers, the men most likely to kill women. And we need to provide comprehensive, wraparound services for high risk victims of domestic violence. Dangerousness must be a consideration by judges in bail and bond decisions -- particularly the dangerous of abusive men toward their victims. https://lnkd.in/gbU2Ez58

Today we officially launched our new advocacy group called VOICES for Victims of Hidden Homicides to support our Justice Project. The Justice Project focuses on suspicious death cases where there is a prior history of domestic violence before a woman dies prematurely. We just wrapped up our first retreat for family members of lost loved ones at H7 at Hope Mountain in Colorado. #lastwarningshot #hoperisingscience https://lnkd.in/e3mJ-D2s
