"Nex Benedict should be alive today, and while today’s resolution offers a measure of accountability, there is no justice in a tragic case like this one. Nex was failed by the Owasso School District at nearly every opportunity, and so were other transgender and nonbinary students in this District. We can only hope that the intervention that never came for Nex can come for other students and future students in time. All students deserve the right to go to school without fear of violence, bullying, or harassment, and today’s resolution will be a critical step in helping make that a reality for more people. We are deeply grateful for the advocacy of local leaders in Oklahoma, as well as the Department of Education’s leadership in holding Owasso School District accountable, ensuring that all students have access to safe and accessible public education." - Imani Rupert-Gordon

For every member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and for those who support us: We’ve got this. We’ve got us. No matter who you are, where you live, or the outcome of yesterday’s election, today we are an LGBTQIA2S+ community united. Together, across races, places, genders, and abilities, we have shown up for each other by organizing, mobilizing, and casting our ballots for the freedom to be ourselves. Our work continues. https://lnkd.in/gcFrNSRF

The LGBTQ community has a long history of never backing down from a fight for our rights. United in our strength, during the most difficult of times, we have pushed forward and achieved significant progress for decades. This moment feels uniquely challenging. But we have been here before, up against what feels like insurmountable oppositional forces. And each time we have to reckon with the reality that the way we see the world - one of kindness and bounty, justice and equity, a world where queer excellence and joy is folded into the fabric of daily life - is not universally shared, we hurt. We are worried for our friends and family most vulnerable to hate. And we need to fight. Tirelessly and together. But for today, commit. To your neighbors, to safety for all, to justice. We got us.

“NCLR believes that Proposition 314 in Arizona could have serious implications for the state’s immigrant community. It would further marginalize vulnerable groups—such as women, children, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those living with HIV—by pushing them into the shadows and discouraging them from seeking essential legal, medical, or social assistance. This would not only harm those directly affected but would also undermine broader community trust in public institutions. When people feel they cannot safely interact with authorities or access basic services, it weakens the social fabric and increases vulnerabilities, ultimately making entire communities feel less safe." - Hogar’s Program Associate Pamela Mercado Garcia https://lnkd.in/gWGcx7e9

In 1994, when the U.S. Government finally recognized that LGBTQ immigrants facing persecution could seek asylum within our borders, NCLR became the first national LGBTQ organization to create a program to assist them in finding a home in the United States. For 30 years, NCLR's Immigration and Asylum Project has protected and uplifted LGBTQ immigrants in their quest for a safe and welcoming home. To honor this ongoing work, we have given the program a new name: 'Hogar {Home} - Legal and Practical Support for LGBTQ Immigrants'. Cheers to our Immigration and Asylum team for 3 decades of daily work that has changed thousands of lives! And a huge thank you to our supporters who make NCLR's life-saving work possible year after year!

In response to the US allowing asylum claims from LGBTQ immigrants, the National Center for Lesbian Rights immediately established the Immigration Project in 1994. Since then, the Immigration Project has advanced immigration law and assisted thousands of LGBTQ immigrants in obtaining legal status in the U.S. Read the full piece recognizing 30 years of NCLR's Immigration and Asylum Program: https://lnkd.in/g3V9YHZW
