One-to-One Instinct: Primary relationships or coupling (also known as the Sexual subtype) + Governs our sexuality, intimate relationships and close friendships, and the vitality of the life force within our bodies 3 BASIC INSTINCTS: Our instinctual or body-based center has three major drives, which are called the self preservation, social and one-to-one instincts. We use all three of these instincts for the activities of daily life. They have a long history in our evolutionary development, being necessary for our survival as individuals and as a species. The three instincts create three subtypes for each Enneagram type, depending on which instinct is most important to us. The subtypes are important variations of the personality types. We attempt to both express and resolve the habitual emotional state of our personality through our subtype style and “pre-occupation.” Learning to manage our subtype issues is a vital tool for personal awareness and growth.
