All of the seminars were so impactful! Some of my major take-aways included: - Don't believe everything you think. Don't let the disappointments of yesterday rob you of the possibilities of tomorrow. - Be an owner, not a renter. Owners are more invested in the small details and ongoing outcomes of a project or proposal. - Due diligence includes more than the financial stuff. We need to match cultures, technologies, employee management, and customer support to make a successful merger or acquisition. - To get folks involved in tech, synergize with their interests. One dad got his kid to code because she wanted to make new worlds in Roblox. - Learn how to identify your burnout. One speaker said that if you are unusually hostile, that could be a clue. She said that "I am usually hostile, but it's that extra step you need to watch out for!" - And come to the NAAIA National Conference because it is always uplifting, energizing, and fun! #NAAIA24 #NAAIAinNOLA

  • Last week, our Juneteenth in Mexico celebration was phenomenal. Held at Black-owned restaurant Buena Vida Cantina, we came together to learn little-known history, eat great food, and fellowship with NAAIA members and allies. Our Mistress of Ceremonies, Bivett Brackett from #BigBlackBrunch, spoke about our rich history in Mexico. Her unique approach to the subject was to enlighten us about early American cowboy culture. Many of the first cowboys in the Americas were Black, and some of the cattle was from Africa. Innovations like herding cattle from horseback appeared in the Americas at a time when most cowboys were enslaved Africans. So some of the cowboy techniques and practices still in use today came from our communities in the Southern U.S. and Mexico. Thank you to our Juneteenth planning committee - Monique Howard and @SeanMcCormick. They always come through with original programming for our chapter. Congratulations to the winners of our Loteria (bingo) and Juneteenth trivia games. For those who may not know, this national holiday recognizes June 19, 1865, the date that Black slaves in Texas were finally freed. It was more than 2 full years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and more than 88 years after the United States declared it's independence from Britain on July 4, 1776.
