🚨 Spotted lanternflies are moving into Michigan, threatening crops like grapes and apples. Efforts to control their spread are focusing on managing their primary host, the invasive tree-of-heaven. 🌿 New Biopesticides for Spotted-Wing Drosophila Management! 🌿 Dr. Julianna Wilson, Assistant Professor of Tree Fruit Entomology at MSU, has received a USDA grant to develop yeast-based biopesticides targeting the invasive spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), which impacts cherry and berry crops. Using RNA interference technology, her research aims to create eco-friendly alternatives to traditional insecticides, potentially lowering costs and environmental impact for farmers. We welcomed our new cohort of MSU Entomology Graduate Students this week at New Student Orientation! Our 9 incoming students will be working with 5 different faculty members on projects related pesticide resistance, insect biodiversity, phenology, modeling, and integrated pest management. Among our tour stops was the A.J. Cook Arthropod Research Collection in the Natural Sciences Building.
