An unforgettable moment occurred a few weeks ago in our Labor and Delivery Department at Mount Sinai West! As one of our patients was heading to the operating room to welcome her fifth child, her partner surprised her by getting down on one knee and proposing! The room was filled with tears, joy, and cheers from our team as we celebrated both the engagement and the arrival of their baby—two beautiful milestones in one day! Congratulations to this wonderful family! #WeFindAWay #maternity #proposal #shesaidyes

What happens when your passion is suddenly stripped away? That's what professional drummer Frank Funaro faced in 2010 when he began experiencing severe pain in his left arm. As a musician, he pushed through, but soon noticed strange spasms and uncontrollable movements— even off the drums. "Drumming was my identity, and suddenly, I couldn’t do it anymore." After years of searching for answers, Frank was diagnosed with musician’s focal dystonia, a neurological disorder that affects precise, repetitive movements. After years of failed treatments, Frank finally found hope. He was connected to Dr. Joohi Jimenez-Shahed, an expert in movement disorders, who introduced him to deep brain stimulation (#DBS)—a cutting-edge treatment that delivers electrical currents to specific areas of the brain to reduce symptoms. Under the skilled hands of Dr. Brian Kopell, Frank underwent DBS surgery in March 2021. While recovery wasn’t immediate, the tremors and spasms gradually began to fade. By July 2021, Frank could walk more normally, and soon after, he returned to the drums. Today, Frank’s journey continues with regular care from the team at Mount Sinai. “I have the utmost respect and gratitude for the entire team,” he says. #WeFindAWay #patientstory #focaldystonia #neurology

Two years after receiving a life-changing kidney transplant at Mount Sinai, 9-year-old McKaylea returned to New York City to fulfill her Make-A-Wish dream—and “do all the things I couldn’t do when I was here for my transplant.” In addition, she wanted to meet the transplant surgeon who saved her life, Dr. Vikram Wadhera, and, importantly, share ice cream with him. During McKaylea's visit, she went to Noi Due Gelato on the Upper West Side with Dr. Wadhera and Rafael Khaim, DNP, Clinical Senior Operations Manager, Pediatric and Adult Renal Transplant. Rafael even surprised McKaylea with an American Girl Doll. McKaylea’s mother is incredibly grateful to Dr. Wadhera, and the “phenomenal” team who cared for McKaylea and supported the family. “From the receptionist to the nutritionist, so many kind and skilled professionals. They blew me out of the water,” she says. “All willing to answer any and all questions and address my concerns.” She has special praise for Rafael, who she says, “was on the jump from day one” and throughout McKaylea’s journey for a new kidney. Rafael is aware that that everyone on the team can make a lasting impact on patients. “We all have the potential to change the lives of those we care for, in and out of the hospital, and can shape experiences that will turn into cherished memories forever.” #WeFindAWay
