#teamMnDOT employees help each other every day with projects and tasks that serve the state of Minnesota. Sometimes, though, they need a bit of personal help off the job – and the Vacation Donation program is one way to assist colleagues in their time of need. Officially called the "Vacation Donation to Sick Leave Account program," this policy allows all state employees to donate up to 40 hours of accrued vacation leave each fiscal year, to be converted to sick leave that may be used by another employee who has applied to receive assistance through the program. Past beneficiaries of the program have included employees undergoing treatment for cancer or recovering from surgery complications, and parents who needed more leave to care for critically ill children. Several #teamMnDOT offices and programs were recognized with recent awards! - MnDOT’s Safety and Labor Relations teams were honored for their work with innovative changes and leadership in the State Safety Program during the 2024 Safety and Loss Control Conference, hosted by the Dept. of Administration in September. These teams developed a risk mitigation process and plan to ensure MnDOT employees are driving safely. Following the success of the program, numerous other state agencies have followed MnDOT’s lead and implemented a similar process. - The same conference honored MnDOT’s Safety Team with an Excellence in Safety Award. This award recognizes the contributions an organization made in fostering a safety and health culture in the workplace. In giving this accolade, the Dept. of Administration cited the Safety Team's commitment to “a work environment that encourages employees to report all incidents and have the authority to stop work” and “demonstrating the role of leadership in promoting safety and health within the organization.” - Finally, MnDOT’s Phoenix program was honored by the nonprofit Achieve Twin Cities as one of several Twin Cities Community Partners supporting young people through the Step Up and Achieve College internship programs.

The Graduate Engineer and Land Surveyor Training Program is the longest-running Career Pathway Program at the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The program started more than 40 years ago to meet MnDOT's future engineering and surveying staffing needs by developing a pool of talented, qualified individuals ready for permanent placement at the end of the two-year program. We recently dug into the program's archives and found a group photo of the 2006 Trainees at the Fall Grad Meeting in Bemidji, MN. Though the times may have changed, MnDOT's Grad program still brings in top talent to keep Minnesotans safe for future years to come.
